Hilo, Hawaii - Chris Bradshaw threw TCUs first no-hitter since 1995 Friday to lead the Frogs to a 9-0 win over Hawaii-Hilo. TCU, which has won six straight games, including all five on the Hawaiian Islands, improve to 19-9 overall, 10-2 in WAC action. Hilo drops to 4-21 overall, 3-14 in WAC play.
Bradshaw is the first individual to throw a complete-game no-hitter since Kight Higgins threw a seven-inning no-hitter in 1985. Overall, it is the seventh no-hitter in school history, and only the second nine-inning no-hitter. The no-hitter was the first for TCU since 1995, when four hurlers (Toby Dollar, Derek Lee, Scott Atchison and Flint Wallace) combined to no-hit Abilene Christian in a nine-inning contest.
Bradshaw allowed only three base runners in the game, including two in the ninth. Ryan Petersen reached on a bunt in the second inning. The call was originally scored as a base hit, but was later changed to a throwing error by third baseman Mike Settle. After Petersen reached on the error, Bradshaw did not allow another batter to reach base until the 9th inning, a span of 20 consecutive hitters retired. In the 9th, Bryce Watanabe reached first on a wild pitch strikeout, then Doug Rhodes was hit by a pitch. After Bradshaw forced Gary Manfre to pop out, he struck out the next two hitters to end the game.
I have to thank the defense for making some big plays behind me, especially the popup that Ramon (Moses) caught in the first inning, said Bradshaw. I started out a little wild, going 3-0 on the first two batters. After I adjusted to the mound, I was able to keep them off balance. I was in a such a zone during the middle innings that I did not even realize how many outs had been recorded. In the eighth and ninth innings, I was worrying about making a good pitch and trying to stay focused. The hardest part was trying to stay focused and not look ahead. Before the game, I was joking around with Jason Price that I was going to throw a no-hitter. It is still hard to believe that it actually happened.
TCU jumped out to a 5-0 lead, scoring five runs in the first inning on four walks, a hit batsmen and two hits. Walter Olmstead singled home one run, then Jason Prices double brought home two more runs. The final two runs scored on a balk and a bases loaded walk to Moses. In the eighth, the Frogs scored a pair of runs on three hits, including a double by Settle and a triple by Moses. Settle drove in two runs in the ninth on a two-out single.
Bates, Olmstead and Settle led the Frogs with two hits each. TCUs six-game road trip on the Hawaiian Islands will come to an end Saturday with a single-game vs. Hilo. First-pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. central time (11 a.m. Hawaiian time).
