
TCU Drops Tight One At No. 9 West Virginia

Mountaineers hand TCU its second shutout of the year
MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – No. 9 West Virginia made a pair of second inning runs stand up in handing TCU a 2-0 loss on Thursday night at Kendrick Family Stadium. The Horned Frogs outhit the Mountaineers, but couldn't push across a run as it was shutout for the second time this season.
The Rundown
TCU had base runners in five of nine innings, but couldn't come up with the hit needed to scratch across a run as they stranded seven in the game.
West Virginia turned two doubles the second inning into the only two runs of the game. Back-to-back doubles opened the frame, giving the Mountaineers a 1-0 lead. After a sacrifice bunt moved the runner to third, a sacrifice fly brought him home for a 2-0 lead.
The Frogs had a chance in the fifth to get back in the game. Jack Bell singled with one out and moved to third on a Preston Gamster base knock. They would be stranded as the Mountaineers got a ground out to end the inning.
Another opportunity for the Frogs to get back in the game came and went in the sixth. Back-to-back singles from Chase Brunson and Nolan Traeger had the tying runs on base with one out, but a pair of strikeouts ended the inning.
TCU used a pair of double play balls to keep the game close. A lead-off walk in the fourth was erased as was a lead-off single in the sixth.
Tommy LaPour (1-2) was strong in making his second start since returning from injury. He allowed the two runs on three hits, walked two and struck out five. Walter Quinn tossed three scoreless innings. He surrendered a hit, walked two and struck out four.
