Bullpen throws 5 2/3 scoreless
FORT WORTH – The TCU bullpen tossed 5 2/3 scoreless innings to help the Horned Frogs hold on to a 4-3 win over Utah to complete the series sweep. The victory is the ninth straight win at Lupton Stadium. Preston Gamster led the Frogs with three hits on the afternoon.
The Rundown
Utah jumped out to an early lead in the second with a pair of runs on four hits. With runners on the corners and one out, Zack James was able to limit the damage with a big strikeout for out No. 2. He got a ground ball to end the inning.
The Frogs wasted little time getting back in the game. Chase Brunson led off the bottom of the inning with a base hit and moved to third on a Nolan Traeger double. With the bases loaded and one out, Jack Bell worked a walk to cut the lead in half. Preston Gamster tied the game with a base hit. A diving catch on a sinking line drive off the bat of Colton Griffin resulted in a sacrifice fly as Noah Franco scored to give the Frogs a 3-2 lead.
TCU and Utah traded runs in the third. Utah knotted the game at three in the third with a lead-off home run. Sawyer Strosnider's lead-off double in the bottom of the inning turned into the eventual game-winning tally. Strosnider and Brunson executed a double steal to put two in scoring position with one out. Rob Liddington's grounder drove in Strosnider for a 4-3 lead.
The Frogs defense came up big in the following two innings, turning inning-ending double plays. In the fourth, Nate Stern took over after a one-out walk and got the double play ball. Three walks in the fifth had the bases loaded with only one out. Again, the Stern was able to escape the jam with a double-play ball.
The duo of Mason Brassfield (4-3) and Tanner Sagouspe allowed just one base runner over the final three innings to secure the win. Brassfield fanned one and walked one in two innings. Sagoupse retired all three batters faced to pick up his fifth save of the year.
