Baseball Rallies for 3-1 Victory Over Hilo

TCU finally put a run on the board in the 8th inning. Rudy Ontiveros led off with a single to right field. Anthony Bernal replaced Hilo starter Ben Siff on the mound. Terry Trofholz, the first batter Bernal faced, moved pinch runner Jeff Reed to second on a sac bunt. Rudy Rivera reached on a throwing error by second baseman Mike Hobbs, advancing Reed to third. Tom Bates' single to center field brought home Reed, tying the game at 1-1.
Then in the 9th, TCU took advantage of a pair of Hilo errors, scoring two unearned runs. Jason Price doubled home Erick Macha to account for the winning run. Price scored the third run, when right fielder Ryan Petersen's wild throw to third after a flyball out, got away from third baseman Billy Rayl.
Ben Siff allowed a pair of base runners in the first and second innings, but the Frogs were unable to come up with a run. After the first two men reached in the second inning, Siff retired 16 of the next 18 hitters. Siff allowed a Price single in the fifth and a Macha two-out base hit in the seventh, but both runners were unable to score.
Hilo's only run came in the first inning on a TCU error, a wild pitch and a Brian Rooke sacrifice fly. The unearned run would prove to be the difference in the game.
TCU starter Justin Crowder held the Vulcans to four hits in 7.1 innings. After the first inning, Crowder retired 19 of 22 Vulcans. After allowing a one-out double to Hobbs in the eighth, Stan Newton replaced Crowder. Newton, the winning pitcher in the series opener, retired the final five Vulcans to earn his second win in three days.
TCU will return to action on Wednesday, March 28 when they face UTA in a single-game. Next weekend, the Frogs will host top-ranked Rice in a three-game series at the TCU Diamond.
