Davis tosses second straight complete game
MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – A masterful performance on the mound by Lance Davis helped TCU even the series with a 4-0 win at No. 9 West Virginia Friday night. Davis twirled his second straight complete game and held the Mountaineers to just five base runners in the game.
The Rundown
Lance Davis (5-3) was brilliant on the mound. He allowed just five base runners in the game on three hits, one walk and one hit by pitch. No Mountaineer advanced beyond second base in the game. He set the side down in order in five of nine innings and retired the final 10 batters he faced. He needed just 108 pitches and finished the night with six strikeouts.
The offense gave him all the run support he would need in the second inning. Preston Gamster ambushed the first pitch of the inning for a lead-off home run. Two batters later, Kyuss Gargett launched a home run to center for a 2-0 lead.
West Virginia's lone threat in the game came in the third as they had two on with two out, but Davis got a big strikeout to end the inning unscathed.
TCU picked up a pair of insurance runs in the eighth inning. Noah Franco hit a pinch hit home run with two outs in the inning. Nolan Traeger was hit by a pitch following the home run. An errant throw following a strikeout had runners on the corners. The Mountaineer pitcher unleashed a second wild pitch, allowing Traeger to score from third for a 4-0 lead.
The Mountaineers didn't mount any threat as their last base runner reached with two outs in the sixth.
