TCU struck out 12 batters
ARLINGTON, Texas – Arizona rallied for a 2-1 win in 10 innings over TCU to claim the Phillips 66 Big 12 Big 12 Championship title. The TCU pitching staff fanned 12 batters in the contest. Jack Bell led the Horned Frogs with two hits.
The Rundown
TCU opened the scoring with a first inning run. Sawyer Strosnider walked, moved to third on a Cole Cramer double and scored on a Noah Franco ground out. TCU managed just five hits the remainder of the game and had just two runners reach second.
The Frogs clung to their lead, dodging bullet after bullet in the contest as Arizona had base runners on in all but three innings. Three times the Wildcats had two in scoring position with one out and three times the Frogs escaped the inning with the lead.
In the third, Gianluca Shinn took over with the bases loaded and one out. He got a pop up and a strikeout to leave them loaded. In the sixth, Braeden Sloan got a shallow fly out and a strikeout to end the threat. Another threat in the eighth was squelched by a strikeout and a ground out. Arizona ultimately left 11 runners on, eight of which were in scoring position.
But it was not to be as a lead-off home run in the ninth tied the game. The Wildcats used a hit-batter in the 10th to take the lead. Back-to-back one out singles put Arizona in front 2-1. TCU had a chance in the bottom of the inning after a one-out single from Anthony Silva, but he was stranded at second.
Nate Stern made his first collegiate start and went a career-high 2 1/3 innings. He allowed two hits and struck out one. Shinn punched out a career-high seven and walked a batter in 2 2/3 innings. Sloan (3-4) took the loss after allowing two runs on four hits in 4 1/3 innings. He walked two and struck out four. Cohen Feser retired both batters he faced in the 10th.
