FORT WORTH – Former TCU baseball standout Jake Arrieta was named the 2015 National League Cy Young Award winner as voted upon by the Baseball Writer's Associate of America. He is the fifth Chicago Cub to win the prestigious award.
Arrieta tallied 17 first-place votes and notched 169 points for a 22-point victory over the Dodgers' Zack Greinke. Clayton Kershaw (Dodgers) finished third in voting.
The award comes on the heels of a remarkable 2015 campaign from the right-hander. He led the Majors with 22 victories, finishing the season with a 22-6 record. His 1.77 season ERA was second in the league. Arrieta dominated opponents in the second half of the season, posting a 0.41 ERA over the course of 88 1/3 innings pitched. He turned in a Cubs' record 20 straight quality starts. The crowning achievement of the season for Arrieta came on Aug. 30 when he threw a no-hitter against Los Angeles in Dodger Stadium.
Arrieta starred on the mound for TCU in 2006 and 2007. As a sophomore, he paced the NCAA with 14 wins en route to being named the Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Year. A two-time first-team all-MWC performer, Arrieta earned second-team All-American honors in 2006.
