HAVANA, Cuba -- The USA Baseball National Team captured its second straight FISU (International University Sports Federation) World Championship with an 18-9 win over Chinese Taipei Tuesday night at Latino Stadium. TCU was well represented on the squad as Head Coach Jim Schlossnagle was an assistant on the staff and right-handed pitcher Jake Arrieta was a starting pitcher on the roster. The National Team finished its summer campaign with a 28-2-1 mark and successfully defended its gold medal won in the 2004 FISU tournament in Taiwan. The .919 win percentage is the best ever by a USA Baseball collegiate team and the tournament win was the first ever for a USA Baseball National Team in Cuba.
Arrieta made six starts for the National Team and finished the season 4-0 with a miniscule 0.27 ERA. In 33.2 innings pitched, the right-hander struck out 34 batters and allowed just one earned run to cross the plate. He gave up just 11 base hits and combined to shut out three opponents.
The junior is the first TCU baseball player to play for the National Team. The journey for Arrieta began on June 22 with the team trials and on July 2, Arrieta was named to the 22-man roster.
The team will head back to the United States tomorrow and disband with the coaches and players heading back to their respective homes from Miami.
