FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU Baseball Head Coach Jim Schlossnagle announced the addition of Randy Mazey as an assistant coach to the baseball staff. He was previously the head coach at former Conference USA-foe East Carolina for three seasons and, prior to that time, spent six seasons as the recruiting coordinator at Tennessee, East Carolina and Georgia."I'm very excited to be a part of the Horned Frog baseball program and I look forward to helping TCU reach Omaha and win," said Mazey.
Mazey posted a three-year record of 120-66-1 (.644) while at East Carolina, which included season marks of 34-27-1 (.548) in 2003, 51-13 (.797) in 2004 and 35-26 (.573) in 2005. In addition, the Pirates also registered a 60-30 (.667) Conference USA regular-season record during the three-year span, which included three NCAA Regional at-large berths. During the 2004 season, Mazey's Pirates were ranked in the top 10 for numerous weeks during the season, hosted the NCAA Regionals and advanced to the Super Regionals. For his efforts in 2004, Mazey was honored as the Conference USA Coach of the Year.
"I am extremely excited to add Coach Mazey to our staff," said Schlossnagle. "He has had great success at the very highest level of college baseball. Having worked together at Clemson, I know, first-hand, that he is one of the most knowledgeable baseball coaches in the nation. Our program and players will benefit greatly from Coach Mazey's expertise."
After a brief stint in professional baseball, Mazey broke into the coaching ranks at his alma mater, Clemson, in 1990. As an assistant coach for the Tigers, he was in charge of recruiting, hitting, outfield play and baserunning, as well as serving as the third base coach during games. In 1993, he was named the head coach at Charleston Southern University. He helped lead Charleston Southern to its first-ever appearance in the NCAA tournament and was named the Big South Coach of the Year in 1996.
The University of Georgia came calling in 1996 when they hired him as the recruiting coordinator and pitching coach. Following his two seasons with the Bulldogs, Mazey made the first of two stops at East Carolina. He spent two seasons with the Pirates in 1997 and 1998 as the recruiting coordinator and pitching coach. In between stints at ECU, Mazey served four seasons as the recruiting coordinator and pitching coach at Tennessee. His recruiting efforts were seen in 2001 when the Volunteers made it all the way to Omaha to play in the College World Series.
Mazey spent his collegiate years as a member of the Clemson Tigers. A four-time letterman at Clemson, he had a career batting average of .331 and a record of 8-1 on the mound. He was part of three ACC regular season conference championship teams and a three-time all-ACC selection. At the culmination of his career, Mazey was drafted in the 28th round by the Cleveland Indians.
Mazey is married to the former Amanda Ross.
