
White evens series with 6-3 victory

FORT WORTH, Texas - A four-run first inning for the White team propelled them to a 6-3 victory, knotting the annual Purple/White World Series at a game apiece. Newcomer Seth Garrison pitched four strong innings, allowing just two runs to earn the victory. Steven Trout hit a solo home run for the Purple team and drove in two with two hits. Matt Carpenter was 2-for-2 with a RBI, helping the White squad pound out eight hits in the contest.A night after being held hitless, the White squad busted out for four runs on two hits in the first inning. Bryan Kervin led the game off with a single and moved to second on Corey Steglich base knock. Matt Vern was hit by the pitch to load the bases. Carpenter and Austin Adams drew walks to plate the first two runs of the game. A Keith Conlon ground out gave White the 3-0 lead and Hunt Woodruff rounded out the scoring with a sacrifice bunt.
Trout's home run with two outs in the second made it a 4-1 contest.
The teams traded runs in the fourth inning. Conlon doubled to lead off the White half of the inning and scored on sacrifice fly off the bat of James Belt. Ben Carruthers singled and moved to second on an error to lead off the inning for Purple and scored on a Trout single to center. After four, White was in control with a 5-2 lead.
White pushed across another run in the top of the sixth, extending the lead to four, 6-2. Carpenter led off the inning with a double and scored on a Conlon sacrifice fly.
Needing four runs to tie the game in the seventh, the Purple team managed just a run on two hits. Teddy Kreder singled with one out and scored on a Clint Arnold double.
Garrison (1-0) surrendered two runs on four hits in four innings of work to earn the win. He struck out two and walked one. Taylor Cragin (1) earned the save with three innings of work after allowing just one run on three hits, while striking out two.
For the Purple squad, Tyler Lockwood (0-1) was touched for five runs on five hits. He walked two and struck out two. Will Skelton twirled three innings, giving up a run on three hits with a strike out.
The series will be decided on Sunday afternoon at Lupton Stadium with first pitch slated for Noon. Donald Furrow will take the mound for the White team and face off against Derek VerHagen of the Purple squad.
