
Purple takes game one of World Series, 6-0

FORT WORTH, Texas - The Purple team came away with a 6-0 win in game one of the annual Purple/White World Series. Newcomers Chris Johnson and Travis Spencer combined to toss six no-hit innings to help lead the Purple squad to victory. Andrew Walker was the offensive star of the night as he was 3-for-3 at the plate with two doubles and two RBIs.Purple jumped out on top in the first inning, taking advantage of a White team error. Ben Carruthers reach safely on an error and scored on Walker's first double of the game.
They extended their lead in the top of the third inning, again taking advantage of another miscue in the field. Walker got the two-out rally started with a single up the middle. After a single by Matt McGuirk moved Walker to third, he came around to score on an error on the relay throw to give the Purple team a 2-0 advantage.
Johnson (1-0) faced only one batter over the minimum in his four innings of work. Bryan Kervin reached on an error, but was gunned down by Walker trying to steal second. The only other batter to reach was Chase Kiecke, who drew a two-out walk in the fourth. Johnson struck out two batters.
A two-run fifth by the Purple squad gave them a commanding 4-0 lead. Clint Arnold reached on a three-base error and scored on a double by Walker. A McGuirk triple plated Walker to round out the scoring in the inning.
Another two run inning in the top of the six accounted for the final score. Steve Ellington led off the inning with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Brett Medlin. Arnold followed with a double, swiped third base and scored on a Carruthers single.
Spencer finished off the no-hitter for Purple with two perfect innings. He picked up one strikeout.
Chance Corgan (0-1) pitched four innings. He allowed two unearned runs on four hits and picked up three strikeouts. Paul Gerrish went two innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits, with two strikeouts.
The series continues on Saturday with first pitch slated for 2 p.m. at Lupton Stadium. Seth Garrison will go for White and face Purple's Tyler Lockwood.
