FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU and Head Baseball Coach Jim Schlossnagle have agreed on a multi-year contract extension, Athletics Director Danny Morrison announced today. Specific terms were not released per university policy.
"Coach Schlossnagle and his staff have done a wonderful job both on and off the field with student-athletes," Morrison said. "The university as a whole is extremely proud of everything that the program has achieved under Jim¹s guidance, and we are excited about the future of Horned Frog baseball."
"I am very thankful that Chancellor Boschini and Danny Morrison have provided great support and direction for our baseball program," remarked Schlossnagle. "My family and I love TCU and Fort Worth. This represents an awful lot of hard work on the part of our staff and players."
In July of 2003, Schlossnagle became just TCU¹s ninth head baseball coach since 1940. Since his hiring, he has led the Horned Frogs to consecutive school-record-setting win totals, back-to-back NCAA Regional appearances for the first time in program history, and Conference USA Tournament titles in 2004 and 2005. The Horned Frogs own an impressive 80-46 (.635) record in two seasons under Schlossnagle.
TCU posted a 41-20 mark in 2005 to rack up the first 40-win season in school annals. TCU was ranked among Baseball America¹s top 25 during the campaign, and held its highest-ever preseason ranking (21st). After nailing down 20 wins during the league slate, the Horned Frogs shared the C-USA Tournament title with top-ranked Tulane, and ultimately advanced to the NCAA Regional in Waco, Texas.
In 2004, his first season, Schlossnagle¹s Frogs picked up 39 wins and made their first appearance in the NCAA Regionals since 1994. It was just the third time in school history that TCU had qualified for the tournament. TCU garnered an NCAA automatic berth by winning the Conference USA Tournament championship, the first league tourney title in the program¹s history.
Schlossnagle has set the stage for many successful seasons to come through his recruiting prowess. His first recruiting class at TCU was ranked the third best in the nation by Baseball America. In June of 2005, four TCU players were drafted in the Major League Baseball Draft, including the school¹s first-ever first round selection. All-American pitcher and National Player of the Year finalist Lance Broadway was selected with the 15th overall pick by the Chicago White Sox. In addition, Schlossnagle has helped increase attendance drastically at Lupton Stadium and Williams-Reilly Field, where the Frogs sported a 25-6 record last year.
Prior to his time at TCU, Schlossnagle spent two years as head coach of the UNLV baseball program. The Rebels owned a 77-47 record under Schlossnagle, good for a .621 winning percentage. In 2003, he was recognized as the Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year after leading the Rebels to both the regular season and conference tournament titles. The team¹s regular season championship was the first outright title in school history and the Rebels¹ tourney crown was their first in the MWC.
UNLV sported a 47-17 (.734) mark in 2003, including a 24-6 record in league play. The 24 conference wins were the most in MWC history. In the postseason, UNLV advanced to the NCAA Regional Finals before eventually falling to Arizona State. It was the Rebels¹ first NCAA appearance since 1996. The Rebels finished the regular season ranked 15th nationally and the 47 wins were second most in school history.
Prior to UNLV, Schlossnagle served an eight-year stint at Tulane as associate head coach and recruiting coordinator for the Green Wave. Schlossnagle joined the Tulane program in August of 1993 and was an integral part of the Green Wave¹s success, helping Tulane to six NCAA Regional appearances during his tenure. The nation¹s winningest team in 2001, Tulane finished the season with a 56-13 overall record and a 21-6 mark in C-USA. The Green Wave defeated defending national champion LSU, 7-1, to win the New Orleans Super Regional and advance to the College World Series for the first time in school history.
Along with being an outstanding recruiter, Schlossnagle has also had great success in developing pitchers. From 1994-2001, Tulane¹s baseball program ranked first or second in Conference USA in earned run average and placed at least one pitcher on the all-conference team seven times. In that same period, 18 Tulane pitchers signed professional baseball contracts.
Prior to arriving in New Orleans, Schlossnagle served as the pitching coach at Clemson in 1993. He started his coaching career as an assistant at Elon (N.C.) College where, in three years, he helped lead his alma mater to a 99-41 record, two South Atlantic Conference Championships, a District 26 title and an Area 7 Regional appearance.
A native of Hagerstown, Md., Schlossnagle was a pitcher on the 1989 Elon squad that finished 39-7 and appeared in the NAIA World Series. He graduated magna cum laude from Elon with a bachelor's degree in physical education in 1992 and earned a master's of education in human performance and health promotion from the University of New Orleans in 1995.
Schlossnagle and his wife, Kami, have a 5-year-old son, Jackson Lambert, and a 4-year-old daughter, Kathleen Grace.
