FORT WORTH, Texas - The Purple-White World Series kicked off with a pitcher's dual on Wednesday afternoon at Lupton Stadium. The White team came away with the 1-0 victory, tallying a run in the bottom of the seventh inning on a wild pitch. Eric Marshall threw five shutout innings and Zach Ashwood twirled six shutout innings.
Through five innings, neither team could mount an offensive threat as both Ashwood and Marshall were untouchable. Each team had two hits through the first five innings. For the Purple team, Marshall struck out four and walked only one, limiting his pitch count to just 73 pitches. Ashwood did equally well for the Purple team, striking out three and walking one in his five innings. He threw 76 pitches.
Dillon Farish retired the first batter he faced in the bottom of the seventh, before Jerid Buttell broke through with an infield single. Short stop, Bryan Kervin's throw sailed wide, allowing Buttell to advance to second base. Another error on the infield allowed catcher Aaron Smith to reach base safely, putting two runners on with only one out. Buttell swiped third, prompting Purple team coach Matt Siegel to issue an intentional walk to Ben Carruthers, loading the bases. With the infield drawn in, Matt Carpenter made a great play to erase Jerid Buttell at the plate to keep it a scoreless tie. With Ryan Pack at the plate, Farish threw a wild pitch, allowing Smith to scamper home with the game-winning run.
Taylor Cragin earned the win for the White team with one shutout inning of work. He surrendered just one hit. Farish suffered the loss, allowing an unearned run on two hits.
Tallying hits in the contest for the Purple squad were Matt McGuirk, Andrew Walker and Hunt Woodruff. The White team was lead by hits from Keith Conlon, Buttell, Steven Trout and Teddy Kreder.
Game time for game two of the World Series is set for 7:15 p.m. Thursday night at Lupton Stadium.
