Fort Worth, Texas - In the first game of the Purple and White world series, the White team came out on top, 11-5. They took advantage of some poorly timed errors to break the game open in the second inning and cruised to the victory. Matt Carpenter was 1-for-1 with a home run and three walks. Austin Adams also had a good day, driving in four runs with a double and a home run.
The Purple team got the scoring started in the first as Jerid Buttell drew a lead off walk off of Sam Demel. After a wild pitch and an infield single from Bo Cogbill, Spencer Jackson hit a sacrifice fly to plate the early run.
The White team came back in the bottom of the second off of starter, Omar Arif. Arif hit Carpenter to start the inning. Carpenter advanced to second on an Andrew Walker base hit. Justin Roland grounded into a force out, erasing Carpenter at third. Another hit by pitch by Arif put Chase Kiecke on to load the bases. Stuart Musslewhite tied the game with a base knock. Matt McGuirk gave the White team the lead on a ground ball to first base that Spencer Jackson booted, plating two runs. Carpenter rounded out the scoring in the inning with a two-run jack to make it 6-1 after two.
Austin Adams made it 8-1 in the bottom of the third with a two-double that scored Kiecke and McGuirk.
Shawn Ferguson provided an offensive spark for the Purple team in the top of the fifth as he led off the inning with a long home run to left center, but relief pitcher Will Skelton struck out two of the next four batters to end the inning.
Purple tacked on three more runs in their final two at-bats, highlighted by an Adams two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth.
The White team made it closer in the top of the seventh as they put a three spot up on the board. Two errors led to the three runs but Kody Haverkamp struck out Ferguson to end the game.
Demel struck out four in his two innings of work to pick up the win.
The second game of the World Series starts Sunday morning at 10:30.
