FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU right fielder Terry Trofholz (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior), who shattered the Conference USA batting record with a .441 average in 2002, has been named the 2002 Metroplex College Baseball Player of the Year by the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) Hall-Ruggles Chapter.
Trofholz will be honored by SABR with an on-field presentation prior to Tuesday night's Texas Rangers-Chicago White Sox contest at The Ballpark in Arlington.
In addition to setting the C-USA batting record, Trofholz also tied the TCU record for hits in a season with 94. His .441 average ranked seventh nationally in 2002 and was the second highest mark in TCU history. For his efforts, Trofholz was named a second-team all-American by Baseball Weekly, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and the American Baseball Coaches Association.
The senior-to-be, who posted a 21-game hitting streak during the prolific campaign, is coming off an impressive summer with the Anchorage Bucs of the Alaska Baseball League. Trofholz batted a team-high .336 in the collegiate wooden bat league and did not commit an error in the outfield en route to first-team all-Alaska honors.
Trofholz is the first Horned Frog to be named the SABR Metroplex Player of the Year since TCU's last all-America honoree, Royce Huffman, earned the award in 1998.
