KINSTON, N.C. - Four TCU baseball players were honored as all-Conference USA selections Monday at the league's annual baseball banquet. Highlighting the Horned Frogs recognized by the conference was right fielder Terry Trofholz (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior/Creighton), who was the only TCU representative on the first team. Earning second-team honors were pitcher Clayton Jerome (Mesquite, Texas/Poteet), left fielder Chris Meeks (Brownwood, Texas/Brownwood/Eastfield J.C.) and first baseman Walter Olmstead (San Antonio, Texas/MacArthur).
Trofholz garnered first-team honors thanks to a record-breaking season at the plate. The junior holds a .446 batting average, well ahead of the C-USA record of .427, set by Houston's Geofrey Tomlinson in 1997. His 90 hits are only four shy of the TCU single-season record of 94, set by all-American Royce Huffman in 1999.
Besides leading the league in batting average and hits, Trofholz ranks among the league's top ten in runs, triples, total bases, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, sacrifice bunts and stolen bases. He also leads TCU in all of those categories.
This is the second-straight year Trofholz has gained all-conference recognition, as he was named to the WAC's second-team after the 2001 campaign.
Jerome anchored the Horned Frogs' starting rotation all season to earn second-team all-Conference USA kudos. The sophomore has compiled a 9-4 record and 3.17 ERA in 15 starts this season. Additionally, the right-hander went 8-2 in league games to lead C-USA in conference victories.
In his first season at TCU, Meeks' .352 batting average ranks second on the squad. The left fielder overcame a dislocated left middle finger that caused him to miss seven games to rank second on the team with 63 hits and 14 doubles.
TCU's power leader, Olmstead rounds out the squad's all-conference honorees. The switch-hitting first baseman leads the team and ranks among C-USA's top ten with 12 home runs and 53 RBI.
The league's top honors were also announced at Monday's banquet, with Tulane's James Jurries named Player of the Year, Houston's Brad Sullivan claiming the Pitcher of the Year award, East Carolina's Darryl Lawhorn collecting Freshman of the Year honors and Louisville's Lelo Prado being named Coach of the Year.
