Honolulu, Hawaii-- Ramon Moses had four hits and four runs batted in, leading TCU to a 11-8 win over Hawaii Monday, and a series sweep of the Rainbows. The Frogs improve to 17-9 overall, 8-2 in WAC action. Hawaii drops to 8-16 overall, 3-12 in WAC play.
The last time TCU swept a three-game conference series was in the 1995 season, when the Frogs won all three games at Baylor. TCU did sweep a two-game series at Brigham Young in 1999, but they had not swept a three-game road series since joining the WAC.
For the second straight day, Moses recorded four hits, leading TCUs 18-hit attack. In the series, the Frogs had 48 hits, including 18 in each of the final two games.
Both teams traded runs early in the game. The Frogs took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third on a walk and a pair of hits, including a two-run single by Terry Trofholz. Hawaii then claimed the lead in the bottom half of the inning, scoring three runs on a Matt Purtell double and a two-run home run by Gregg Omori.
In the fourth, the Frogs scored a pair of runs on four two-out basehits, including a two-run single by Moses, lifting TCU to a 4-3 lead. The Rainbows responded with two runs on three hits in the bottom half of the inning, allowing Hawaii to take a 5-4 lead into the fifth.
Both starting pitchers did not figure in the decision. TCU starter Chad Durham allowed five runs on five hits and four walks in 4.0 innings. Hawaii starter Wakon Childers gave up five runs on 10 hits in 4.0 innings. David Tombrella (4-1) earned the win for the Frogs. Tombrella pitched 3.0 scoreless innings, allowing only two hits. Hawaii reliever Matt LeDucq, who suffered the loss, allowed four runs on six hits in 2.1 innings.
TCU tied the game in the fifth on a Tom Bates run-scoring double. The Frogs took the lead for good in the sixth on a Moses single and another Bates basehit. The Frogs increased the lead to 10-5 in the seventh, scoring four runs on three hits. Mike Settle and Jason Price got things started with back-to-back one-out basehits. Moses followed with a triple to left center field, driving in two runs. The final two runs of the inning came on a balk and a pair of wild pitches. In the ninth, Moses walked, advanced to third on a Trofholz base hit, then scored on a double steal.
Moses ended the series with 11 hits in 13 at-bats, raising his batting average from .143 to a season-high .309. Trofholz and Bates each had three hits and two runs batted in. Settle, Price and Rivera all scored a pair of runs in the finale.
TCU will next travel to Hilo, Hawaii for a three-game series against Hawaii-Hilo. The series will consist of single games, Thursday-Saturday, March 22-24.
