Rainbows Rally to Defeat TCU, 7-6

FORT WORTH (Apr. 29) Hawaii pitcher Randon Ho held TCU to one run in the final five innings as the Rainbows defeated the Frogs, 7-6 Saturday at the TCU Diamond. The Rainbows put an end to their seven-game losing streak as they avoided the sweep by TCU. The Frogs drop to 20-28 overall, 11-12 in Western Athletic Conference play. Hawaii improves to 23-27 overall, 10-14 in the WAC.
Ho, pitching in relief for the second time this season, held TCU to one run on five hits in five innings pitched. He walked one and struck out three to earn his sixth win of the year. Hawaii starter Rich Snider allowed five runs, three earned, in four innings.
Both teams had plenty of chances in the game. Hawaii stranded 12 men and grounded into two double plays, while the Frogs left 11 men on base and grounded into two double plays, including a game ending double play ground out by Marshall Wilson. The Rainbows put together some timely hits and took advantage of TCU's sloppy defense. After playing perfect defense in the first two games of the series, TCU committed five errors. Only four of the seven Rainbow runs were earned.
Hawaii scored three times in the second and twice in the third, building a 5-1 lead. In the second, the Rainbows had only one hit. TCU starter David Tombrella walked three men, hit another and committed a throwing error on Aaron Pribble's sacrifice bunt. The only hit of the inning was a RBI-single by Nate Jackson. Pribble drove in a run on one of three Rainbow hits in the third.
Tom Bates accounted for TCU's first two runs in the game. He homered in the second to plate TCU's first run of the game and then drove in a second run with a double in the third. Bates then came around to score on Rudy Rivera's run-scoring single. Bates led the Frogs with four hits, three runs scored and two runs batted in.
The Frogs took the lead in the fifth, scoring three runs on four hits. Bates doubled, Jason Price singled, Rivera walked to load the bases. Bates scored on Wilson's ground out, Price and Rivera scored on Levi Groomer's single to right field.
The Rainbows tied the game in the sixth on one hit and two TCU errors. Jackson reached on Trey Crawford's fielding error to open the inning. Jackson then scored when TCU pitcher Stan Newton's threw the ball away on Matt Purtells infield hit. The Rainbows took the lead in the seventh on a pair of hits and a RBI-sacrifice bunt by Jackson. Newton suffered the loss for TCU. He allowed four runs, two earned on seven hits and five hits. TCU starter David Tombrella allowed three runs, two earned, on two hits and four walks in 1.1 innings.
The Frogs won the first two games of the series by scores of 4-1 and 7-1.
