TCU Baseball Falls at Hawaii-Hilo, 10-6

KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii (March 18) -- Playing under a high-sky with light trade winds, the University of Hawaii at Hilo hammered out season-high 16 hits in defeating TCU, 10-6, in Western Athletic Conference Baseball at the Kailua-Kona baseball field.
Brandon Chaves led the way with three hits while Shaye Miura, Jacob Ryan, Ryan Petersen and Kevin Yee collected a pair each. Miura, Patrick Lynch and Yee doubled while Petersen had two. Yee also had a team-high three RBI. In all, 10 Vulcans had a hit.
The Vulcans (13-18, 4-8) whacked out five hits in the first inning to gain a 2-0 lead. Miura singled and moved to second on Chaves sacrifice bunt. Ryan's double drove in Miura. Ryan was then picked off second base by Brad Rogers. Park and Petersen's single were followed by Yee's single. Park scored but Petersen was thrown out trying to score.
In the fourth, the Vulcans added four runs on three hits and a TCU error. Chaves singled and stole second. Park walked to put men on first and second. Following an RBI single by Petersen, Yee's double scored Park and Petersen. Yee scored on Shaun Wooley's fielding error.
The Horned Frogs (8-19, 3-6) scored in the fourth on Mickey Scala's single which drove in Greg Bratton. They added a run in the sixth as Mark Hamilton doubled and raced home on Tom Bates fielder's choice.
Miura doubled, Chaves singled, Ryan doubled and Lynch doubled to score three Vulcan runs in the sixth. With one out and Lynch on second, Petersen hit a soft liner to second base which TCU's Mickey Scala snagged and doubled out Lynch.
Trailing 9-2 in the seventh, the Frogs made a run. Hamilton's triple past a diving center fielder drove in Marshall Wilson and Greg Bratton. Shaun Wooley then parked an 0-2 pitch in the parking lot beyond the right field fence to pull the Frogs within three.
In the eighth, two-out singles by Wilson and Roger's put the tying run at the plate. Vulcan closer Jason Lippert shut the door by getting Levi Groomer to ground out to second. Lippert then got Bratton and Hamilton to strike out looking and Wooley to ground out to end the game.
The Vulcans added an insurance run in the ninth on Paul Yap's pinch-hit single which drove in Brian Rooke.
Hamilton led TCU with three hits and two RBI. Groomer added two hits.
