Thompson Leads Frogs to 6-3 Win

HILO, Hawai'i (March 16) -- Shawn Thompson pitched seven shutout innings to lead TCU to a 6-3 win over Hawaii-Hilo Thursday night, March 16. The Frog, who had dropped five straight games, improve to 8-17 overall, 3-4 in WAC play. Hilo drops to 11-18 overall, 2-8 in conference action.
Thompson held the Vulcans to only two hits and three walks in seven innings. He struck out four, improving his record to 3-2 this season. David Tombrella allowed three unearned runs in the eighth on three hits and a TCU error. Stan Newton earned his first save of the year, pitching a scoreless ninth.
TCU jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, scoring twice in the first and three times in the third. All five of the runs came on home runs. Mickey Scala hit a two-run shot to right field in the first, scoring Levi Groomer. Then in the second, Mark Hamilton drove in three runs on his fifth home run of the season. Scala and Hamilton led the Frogs with two hits each. Shortstop Matt Srp added a base hit, his first of the season, and two walks.
The Frogs added an insurance run in the fifth on one hit, one walk and a pair of sacrifice bunts. Hamilton singled to start the inning, Shaun Wooley followed with a walk. Jason Price and Tom Bates delivered consecutive sac bunts with Hamilton scoring on the Bates sacrifice.
The Vulcans left 10 men on base, including the bases loaded in the fourth and fifth innings. Hilo stranded one man in the eighth and two in the ninth.
The Frogs and Vulcans will continue the three-game series on Friday, March 17. First-pitch is scheduled for 10 p.m. central time.
