Quartet of pitchers combine for TCU’s fourth shutout
FORT WORTH – The quartet of Tommy LaPour, Trever Baumler, Mason Brassfield and Tanner Sagouspe dominated in leading TCU to a 3-0 win over Utah Friday night at Lupton Stadium. The shutout was the fourth of the season for the Horned Frogs.
The Rundown
Pitching dominated the game for the Horned Frogs as they held the Utes to just three hits. Utah had just two runners reach third base in the contest. The Utes sent more than four batters to the plate just once in the game.
Tommy LaPour (1-1) made his first start since Week 1 and allowed just one hit, walked two and struck out three in three innings. Trever Baumler followed with three shutout frames. He surrendered two hits, walked one and struck out two. Mason Brassfield fanned two in two scoreless. Tanner Sagouspe picked up save No. 4 on the year as he worked around a lead-off walk with three straight strikeouts to close out the game.
Utah had the game's first scoring opportunity in the second. A walk and a passed ball had the runner on second with two outs. Colton Griffin came up throwing on a base hit to left and he cut the runner down trying to score from second.
TCU broke the stalemate with a run in the fourth. Sawyer Strosnider led off the inning with a triple and later scored on a wild pitch to give the Frogs a 1-0 lead.
The Frogs added two runs in the fifth. A lead-off walk set the stage for the big inning. With one out, Preston Gamster doubled to left to put two in scoring position with one out. Griffin jumped on the first pitch and drove it into left field for a two-run single and a 3-0 lead.
