
TCU Tops Northwestern, 9-2

FORT WORTH – A six-run fifth inning broke open a close game as TCU ran away with a 9-2 victory over Northwestern Wednesday night at Lupton Stadium. Braeden Sloan pitched six solid innings in picking up his first career win, while Luke Boyers and Cole Fontenelle each homered for the Horned Frogs.
The Rundown
Two batters into the bottom of the first TCU had a 1-0 lead. Luke Boyers was hit by the pitch, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Austin Davis hit a sacrifice fly to give the Frogs the lead.
After Northwestern tied the game in the third, TCU grabbed its lead back in the fourth. Tre Richardson led off the inning with a base hit. Two batters later TCU had a 2-1 lead as Richardson scored on an Elijah Nunez ground out.
The Frogs broke the game open in the fifth, scoring six times on four hits. Anthony Silva led off the inning with a base hit and Boyers followed with a home run to right for a 4-1 lead. Back-to-back two out walks set the stage for Nunez who tripled for a 6-1 lead. Cole Fontenelle followed with a two run home run and TCU had an 8-1 lead.
Two errors in the seventh gifted TCU its ninth run. Northwestern scored in the ninth to account for the final score.
Braeden Sloan (1-2) navigated base runners in each of his first four innings of work, but after a lead-off walk in the fourth, he retired nine of the last 10 batters he faced to get the game into the seventh inning. Sam Stoutenborough, Garrett Wright and River Ridings pitched the final three innings.
