AUSTIN, Texas – No. 17 Texas opened up a 3-0 lead and held off a late-charging TCU team to secure a 3-2 win in the series opener at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. A.J. Balta homered as part of a two hit game for the Horned Frogs.
The Rundown
Texas opened the scoring in the second as a fielding error ultimately loomed large. D.J. Petrinsky singled to open the frame and moved to second on a fielding error. Two batters later he scored to make it a 1-0 ballgame.
TCU threatened to tie the game in the top of the third after back-to-back singles from Adam Oviedo and Conner Shepherd had runners on the corners with only one out. Texas' Nolan Kingham induced an inning-ending double play.
A hit batter followed by a walk in the third had the Longhorns in business once again. Austin Todd scored on a sacrifice fly to make it a 2-0 ball. A fifth inning, two-out home run from Masen Hibbeler pushed the Texas lead to 3-0.
The Frogs got back in the game in the seventh with a pair of runs on three hits. A.J. Balta opened the inning with a home run to right. Johnny Rizer doubled and stole second with one out. Connor Wanhanen came through with a two out single up the middle to pull the Frogs within one, 3-2. That was as close as the Frogs would get at Kingham completed the game by retiring the final seven batters.
Nick Lodolo (6-4) started and allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits. He walked three and struck out two. Charles King finished the game, allowing just a walk and striking out two in 2 1/3 innings.
