Alex Young (8-2) earned the win for TCU as he gave up just a solo home run as part of allowing six hits to the Longhorns. He walked three and struck out four in six innings. Trey Teakell retired all three batters he faced in the seventh. Brian Howard surrendered two hits and struck out two in his two innings of work to close out the game.
TCU struck for three runs in the first and never looked back. Two hit batters around a fly out had the Frogs in business. Evan Skoug lined a double off the right field wall, driving in Cody Jones and Connor Wanhanen for a 2-0 lead. After a Dane Steinhagen base hit, Skoug scored easily on a sacrifice fly from Nolan Brown.
Texas went to the bullpen in the second and called on Connor Mayes who held the Frogs in check for four innings. TCU mustered just one hit off of Mayes through the fifth inning.
Offensively, the Longhorns had chances in each of the first six innings to push across runs, but Texas went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position. The only blemish to the scoreboard was a lead-off home run in the fourth from Tres Barrera to make it a 3-1 ballgame.
Young issued one-out walks in both the first and second innings but retired the next two batters to end the inning. After yielding the home run to Barrera, Young allowed a walk and made an error to put the tying runs on base. He got big strikeout on a bunt attempt for the first out. An inning-ending 5-4-3 double play ended the threat.
Two Longhorn hits around a fly out in the fifth had the Longhorns in business once again. With the runners in motion, Young got Zane Gurwitz to hit a soft liner right to Keaton Jones who stepped on second to complete the second inning-ending double play.
TCU finally got some breathing room in the sixth inning as it pushed across two runs on two hits to make it a 5-1 game. Skoug led off the frame with his second double of the game and moved to third on a fly out from Steinhagen. Brown collected his second sacrifice fly of the afternoon to drive in Skoug for a 4-1 lead. Elliott Barzilli followed, launching a long home run over the left field fence for his second home run of the season.
Two more runs crossed in the eighth to account for the final score. Back-to-back hits from Wanhanen and Skoug put two in scoring position with nobody out. With the infield in, Brown hit a chopper right at the second baseman. The relay home was wide and both runners scored to make it a 7-1 game.
With the victory, TCU improves to 34-8 overall and 10-5 in Big 12 play. The Horned Frogs will hit the road for four straight beginning Tuesday night at Dallas Baptist. Game time in Dallas is set for 6:30.
