TCU Baseball Falls To UTA, 10-7

FORT WORTH - K. J. Hendricks had three hits and Junior Ramirez drove in four runs to lead UTA to a 10-7 win over TCU Sunday at the TCU Diamond. UTA improves to 33-22, while TCU drops to 32-25.
The Mavericks broke the game open in the seventh, scoring six runs on seven hits, including a triple by Hendricks and doubles by Ramirez, Matt Anderson and Joel Alvarado. The six-run inning lifted the Mavericks to an 8-3 lead and gave TCU reliever Stan Newton his first loss of the season. Newton, who entered the game with one out in the seventh, allowed five runs on five hits in 0.1 innings. UTA added insurance runs in the eighth and ninth innings.
UTA scored single runs in the third and fourth innings to take a 2-0 lead. Alvarado homered in the third, then Darrell Preston doubled and scored on a Ramirez base hit in the fourth. As a team, UTA had 15 hits, including five doubles, two triples and a home run.
The Frogs came up with three runs in the fifth to take a 3-2 lead. Cade Harris and Austen Watkins led off the inning with back to back singles, then both runners scored on a Rudy Rivera triple to right center field. Rivera then scored on a Rudy Ontiveros sacrifice fly. TCU scored once in the seventh on a Jason Price triple and a Rivera groundout. The Frogs added two more runs in the eighth on a Erick Macha single, a Walter Olmstead double and a Harris single. In the ninth, Rivera opened the inning with his second triple of the day. And, for the second time, he scored on an Ontiveros sacrifice fly. After pinch hitter Justin Crowder singled, UTA reliever Darrell Preston forced Macha to ground into a double play to end the game. Macha, Olmstead, Rivera each had two hits, while Harris had three hits to lead the team.
Despite allowing three runs in 2.1 innings, Jarrett Garza earned the win in relief. Garza was the third of five UTA pitchers in the contest. TCU starter Clayton Jerome allowed three runs in 6.1 innings. Chad Durham pitched the final 2.1 innings for the Frogs, allowing two runs on four hits. UTA starter Charlie Coffey allowed only one hit and a walk in 3.0 innings.
TCU will return to action Friday, May 18, when they travel to Houston to face the league-leading Rice Owls. Rice defeated Fresno State Sunday to avoid being swept by the Bulldogs. The Owls will enter the contest with a WAC record of 23-10, two games ahead of TCU. Fresno State is now 20-13, three games behind Rice and one-game behind the Frogs. San Jose State defeated Nevada, 7-1, Sunday to complete the three-game sweep of the Wolf Pack. The Spartans have won 10 straight games and are now tied with Fresno State for third with a record of 20-13. The Bulldogs and Spartans will also play a three-game series next weekend in San Jose.
