
TCU-UTA Split Saturday Doubleheader

ARLINGTON - Chris Bradshaw earned his eighth win and Mike Settle had three hits to lead TCU to a 4-3 win over UTA in the first game of a Saturday doubleheader at Allan Saxe Stadium. In the nightcap, the Mavericks pounded out 14 hits, including six for extra bases to win 8-4.
In the opener, the Frogs and Mavericks were tied at 2-2 going into the seventh inning. With one out, Tom Bates reached first base on a wild pitch strikeout. Walter Olmstead was hit by a pitch and Jonathan Marshall reached on an fielders choice that loaded the bases. Mike Settle's single to right field scored Bates and Jason Price's groundout drove in Olmstead for the final run of the inning.
Bradshaw allowed three runs, two earned, on eight hits in 6.1 innings to raise his record to 8-4. Stan Newton pitched the final 0.2 innings to earn his seventh save of the year.
Rudy Ontiveros scored two of the four runs for the Frogs. He singled and scored in both the third and fifth innings. Olmstead drove in Ontiveros with a single in the third and then in the fifth, Ontiveros scored after a throwing error by UTA shortstop K. J. Hendricks. Settle had three hits, while Ontiveros and Erick Macha each had two hits.
UTA scored single runs in the second and third innings to take a 2-1 lead. A pair of hits and a TCU fielding error led to the first run, and a Craig Martin solo home run accounted for the second run. Martin added another solo home run in the seventh.
In the nightcap, Martin drove in four runs on two hits, including his third home run of the day to lead the Mavericks to the win. K.J. Hendricks added three hits, while Darrelll Preston also had three hits. UTA took the lead for good in the third, scoring four runs on five hits, including a two-run home run by Martin. Martin had a sacrifice fly that drove in Hendricks in the first, and a run-scoring triple in the eighth.
TCU built a 4-1 lead, scoring once in the second and three more runs in the third. Olmstead singled and scored on a Marshall base hit in the second, then Olmstead drove in a pair of runs on a triple in the third. After the Olmstead triple, the Frogs would pick up only one more hit in the game, a Ontiveros single in the seventh.
UTA starter Dave Engelson earned the win, his fourth of the season. He allowed four runs, one earned, on five hits in 6.0 innings. Chris Minissale, the game one losing pitcher, earned a save, allowing one hit in 3.0 innings. TCU starter Justin Crowder suffered the loss. He allowed five runs on seven hits in 2.1 innings.
The Frogs are now 32-24 this season, while UTA is 32-22. The rubber game of the three-game series will be held Sunday, May 13 at the TCU Diamond. First-pitch is scheduled for 2:05 p.m.
