FORT WORTH - Walter Olmstead homered and Erick Macha had four hits to lead TCU to a 4-2 win over San Jose State Friday at the TCU Diamond. The contest was a makeup game from the February 25th contest at San Jose that was rained out. The Frogs, which served as the visiting team in today's game, improve to 28-20 overall, 18-9 in Western Athletic Conference play. San Jose State drops to 24-18-1 overall, 11-11 in WAC action.
Olmstead homered to lead off the top of the ninth, breaking the 2-2 tie. After Justin Crowder was hit on the foot by the next Chris Sherman pitch, Dave Fuqua came in to pitch for the Spartans. With pinch runner Jeff Reed at first, TCU third baseman Mike Settle blooped a double down the left field line, scoring Reed and increasing the TCU lead to 4-2. Sherman allowed four runs on 11 hits in 8.0 innings.
Stan Newton allowed a pair of base runners in the ninth on a hit and a TCU fielding error, but managed to retire the final two hitters to earn his sixth win of the season. Newton, who has earned the win in six of TCU's last 11 victories, allowed one hit and a walk in two innings. The outing by Newton was his school-record tying 78th career appearance. Newton replaced TCU starter Chris Bradshaw, who allowed two runs on three hits and five walks, striking out four in 7.0 innings.
TCU scored a single run in the first on a Rudy Ontiveros walk and back to back base hits by Macha and Tom Bates. The Spartans answered with one run in the bottom half of the inning on two walks, a hit batsmen and a Junior Ruiz single. The Spartans took a 2-1 lead in the fifth on a Adam Shorsher solo home run. The Frogs then tied the game in the sixth, when Ontiveros doubled and scored on Macha's base hit up the middle. Macha ended the game with four hits in four at-bats.
The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, April 28, with first-pitch scheduled for 12:05 p.m. The series will conclude with a single-game on Sunday at 1:05 p.m.
