TCU Splits Doubleheader

FORT WORTH - Tom Bates drove in three runs in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader to lead TCU to a 7-3 win at the TCU Diamond. In game two, Jeremy Rogelstad scattered five hits in a complete game shutout as the Spartans won game two, 5-0. The Frogs are now 29-21 overall, 19-10 in Western Athletic Conference play. San Jose State improves to 25-19-1 overall, 12-12 in WAC action.
In game one, the Frogs jumped out to a 7-0 lead, scoring single runs in the first and second innings, then three in the third and two more in the fourth. Tom Bates singled home Terry Trofholz in the first to put the Frogs on top 1-0. Jason Price homered to lead off the second inning, increasing the lead to 2-0. The Frogs scored twice in the third on two hits, including a Walter Olmstead run-scoring base hit, and a Price sacrifice fly. Bates' two-run home run in the fourth accounted for TCU's final two runs of the game. Rudy Ontiveros, Macha and Bates each had two hits in the opener. Ontiveros also walked twice.
TCU starter Justin Crowder allowed only three runs, all coming in the fifth inning on a Brandon Macchi bases loaded double. Crowder, who raised his record to 7-3, scattered eight hits in seven innings. Patrick Newburn pitched two scoreless innings to close the game.
In the nightcap, Rogelstad allowed only five hits and two walks, striking out four in nine innings. After allowing two singles in the second, Rogelstad retired 14 consecutive hitters before giving up a one-out double to Olmstead in the seventh inning. The Frogs left six men on base in the game, including two in the first, second and seventh innings.
The Spartans took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, when Junior Ruiz walked, stole second and scored on Macchi's two-out single. The Spartans added four insurance runs late in the game, scoring two runs in both the eighth and ninth innings. Macchi led the Spartans with three RBIs and two hits in four at-bats. In the doubleheader, Macchi drove in six runs on four hits, including two doubles.
TCU starter David Tombrella was pulled in the second inning, after allowing one run on one hit and two walks. Reliever Chris Frazier kept the Frogs in the game. Frazier allowed two runs on one hit and two walks in a season-high 5.2 innings. Stan Newton, who pitched in his school-record setting 79th game, allowed one hit in 0.2 innings. Josh Gardner pitched the ninth, allowing two runs on two hits.
The Frogs won the series opener on Friday by a score of 4-2. The four-game series will conclude on Sunday with first-pitch scheduled for 1:05 p.m.
