FORT WORTH - TCU rallied for a pair of runs in the eighth inning to defeat San Jose State, 4-3, Sunday at the TCU Diamond. The Frogs, which won three of four games in the series, improve to 30-21 overall, 20-10 in Western Athletic Conference play. San Jose State drops to 25-20-1 overall, 12-13 in WAC action. Lance Brown, TCU's all-time winningest coach, picked up the 450th win in his career.
With the scored tied at 2-2, Rudy Ontiveros led off the bottom of the eighth with a triple to right field. Erick Macha grounded out to third base, keeping Ontiveros at third. After San Jose State pitcher Jahseam George intentionally walked Tom Bates, Walter Olmstead's bunt base hit scored Ontiveros from third as Bates advanced to second. Jason Price then flew out to left fielder Junior Ruiz. On the play, both Bates and Olmstead tagged and advanced to third and second, respectively. San Jose State shortstop Ryan Adams cut the Ruiz' throw and tried to throw out Olmstead at second. The throw got away from second baseman Gabe Lopez and rolled into right field. Bates was able to score on the play, increasing the TCU lead to 4-2.
The Spartans came up with one run in the ninth on singles by Kevin Frandsen and Brandon Macchi, and a RBI-groundout by Patrick Wood. TCU reliever Stan Newton, who raised his record to 7-0, pitched the final 3.0 innings, allowing one run on three hits to earn the win. When Newton entered the game in the seventh, the Spartans had no outs and runners at first and second. Despite allowing a one-out walk to load the bases, Newton retired the final two men in the inning to keep San Jose from taking the lead.
Mike Settle's two-run home run in the second gave TCU an early 2-0 lead. The Spartans tied the game in the fifth on a pair of walks, a single and a bases loaded hit batsmen. Both teams had chances throughout the game as the San Jose State stranded 12 men and grounded into two double plays, while the Frogs stranded six and grounded into three double plays. The Spartans left the bases loaded in the seventh and two on in the first, third and fifth innings.
George suffered the loss, his first of the season. He allowed four runs, three earned, on nine hits in eight innings. TCU starter Clayton Jerome allowed two runs on six hits in 4.1 innings. Reliever Patrick Newburn did not allow a run in 1.2 innings. Newton, who extended his TCU record for career appearances to 80, earned his second win of the series. Newton established the TCU mark for career appearances in yesterday's game, breaking Travis Barr's record of 78 appearances. Overall, Newton has now earned the decision in seven of TCU's last 13 wins.
Olmstead and Trey Crawford each had two hits to lead the Frogs. The Frogs won the series opener on Friday by a score of 4-2, then the two teams split the Saturday doubleheader as the Frogs won game one, 7-3, then dropped game two, 5-0.
