Houston - Baylor's Kelly Shoppach drove in three hits and scored three runs, leading the Bears to a 12-4 win over TCU Saturday in the Astros College Classic. Baylor ends their stay in the classic with a 2-1 record, while Frogs drop to 2-2 on the season.
The Bears jumped out to a 12-0 lead, scoring at least one run in the second thru sixth innings. In the second inning, the Bears took advantage of two hits, a fielding error by first baseman Walter Olmstead and several other miscues to take a 2-0 lead. The Bears then added three runs in the third, one in the fourth, two in the fifth and four in the sixth. Shoppach singled and scored in the second, and doubled and scored in the third.
The Frogs finally got on the scoreboard in the seventh inning, scoring three runs on five basehits. Erick Macha tripled to open the inning, then scored on Tom Bates' RBI-basehit. The triple by Macha was the 14th of his career, tying him for first in career triples. After an Olmstead double, left fielder Jared Lundeen drove in a pair of runs on a single to left center field. The Frogs threatened to score a few more runs in the inning, but they were unable to come up with a big hit, leaving the bases loaded. Lundeen led the Frogs with three hits, Macha and Bates each had two.
TCU starting pitcher David Tombrella suffered the loss. He allowed six runs, five earned on eight hits in 4.0 innings. Baylor starter Steven White earned the win, allowing only three hits in five innings.
TCU will return to action on Sunday, when they face the Texas Longhorns at 4 p.m.
