Frogs Win 1500th Game in TCU Baseball History

FORT WORTH, Texas (Apr. 28) -- Shawn Thompson scattered eight hits and Tom Bates homered as TCU defeated Hawaii, 7-1, Friday at the TCU Diamond. The win was the 1500th win in TCU baseball history. The Frogs improve to 20-27 overall, 11-11 in Western Athletic Conference play. Hawaii drops to 22-27 overall, 9-14 in the WAC.
Thompson allowed one run on eight hits, three walks and six strikeouts, improving his season record to 6-4. Thompson moved into third in career wins with 22. Thompson's complete-game effort was the second consecutive by a TCU pitcher. Chris Bradshaw pitched a complete game in TCU's 4-1 series opening win on Thursday. Gavin Garrick suffered the loss for Hawaii. He allowed four runs on 10 hits in five innings pitched.
Bates was one of three Frogs to have at least three hits in the game. Bates singled in the second, homered in the sixth and tripled in the seventh. He scored once and drove in two runs. Levi Groomer picked up three singles, and Erick Macha singled, doubled and tripled in the game. Bates was a double shy of hitting for the cycle and Macha was a home run shy of the cycle. Seven of TCU's 15 hits went for extra bases.
Hawaii's lone run came in the third inning when Aaron Pribble scored on Rah-Miel Mitchell's two-out base hit. Pribble, making his first ever appearance as a hitter, led the Rainbows with two hits and a walk. Center fielder Nate Jackson also had a pair of hits.
The Frogs tied the game in the bottom of the third when Rudy Rivera stole home. Rivera doubled to open the inning, advanced to third on Erick Macha's single, then scored on a double steal attempt. TCU took the lead for good in the fourth on two hits, the biggest a double by Brad Rogers.
TCU increased the lead to 5-1 in the sixth, scoring three runs on four hits. Bates homered, Price singled and scored on Rivera's second double of the day. Rivera then scored on Groomer's base hit. TCU added two more runs in the seventh on triples by Macha and Bates. Macha scored on Mark Hamilton's sacrifice fly and Rogers, who had reached on a walk, scored on Bates' triple.
The two teams will conclude the series with a single game Saturday, April 29. First-pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. TCU's David Tombrella is scheduled to face Hawaii's Rich Snider.
