TCU Upsets San Jose, 7-5

SAN JOSE, California (April 21) -- TCU jumped out to a 3-0 lead and then held on for a 7-5 win over San Jose State Friday, April 21, at Municipal Stadium. The Frogs are now 18-26 overall, 9-10 in WAC play. San Jose drops to 27-16 overall, 13-7 in the WAC. The first-place Spartans now lead the Frogs by 3.5 games.
In the first inning, Mark Hamilton walked and scored on Shaun Wooley's two-out single. The Frogs increased the lead to 3-0 in the second, scoring two runs on two hits. Levi Groomer's two-out triple scored Trey Crawford, and then Groomer scored on Hamilton's base hit.
The Frogs pounded out 13 hits and walked six times in the game. Six of the seven runs scored by TCU came with two outs in an inning. Groomer, Hamilton, Brad Rogers, Wooley and Tom Bates had two hits each to lead the Frogs. Groomer and Wooley also drove in two runs. Hamilton reached base four times, twice on walks. As a team, six of TCU's 13 hits were two-out base hits. The Frogs stranded 12 men on the bases, while the Spartans left 10 men on base.
The Frogs added two runs in the sixth on three hits. Wooley doubled home Erick Macha, who had reached on a leadoff single. Jasn Price followed Wooley with a run-scoring single, increasing TCU's lead to 6-2. After Price's base hit, the Spartans removed starting pitcher Joey Baker. Baker allowed six runs, five earned on nine hits, six walks in 5.2 innings. He threw 155 pitches in the game.
The Spartans rallied for two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth, closing the TCU lead to one run, 6-5. The first three hittters in the seventh reached base, chasing TCU starter Shawn Thompson from the game. Stan Newton walked the first batter he faced before retiring the final three men in the inning. Thompson allowed four runs, three earned on hits in six innings pitched, improving his record to 5-4. The win was the 21st in Thompson's career. Newton pitched 3.0 innings, allowing one run on one hit and three walks to earn his third save of the year. TCU added an insurance run in the ninth, when Groomer singled home Trey Crawford.
The series will conclude Saturday, April 22nd with a single-game. First-pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. central time. The rubber game of the series will pit TCU's David Tombrella against San Jose State's Tim Adinolfi. The Spartans won the opener of the three-game series, 11-6, on Thursday.
