TCU Baseball Falls to First-Place San Jose State

SAN JOSE, Calif. (Apr. 20) -- San Jose State jumped out to a 4-0 lead and went on to defeat TCU, 11-6, in a Western Athletic Conference baseball game Thursday night at Municipal Stadium.
The victory keeps the Spartans in a first-place tie with Fresno State in the WAC standings at 13-6. SJSU is 27-15 overall.
The Spartans turned in a 16-hit performance, including a triple and four doubles, in the victory. "It was a good offensive game for us," said SJSU head coach Sam Piraro. "We had some timely hitting."
Ryan Brucker's two-run single and Junior Ruiz' two-run double put San Jose State up 4-0 in the second.
Jason Price hit a two-run home run in the fourth to get TCU on the scoreboard. The Spartans increased their lead to 8-2 in the bottom of the inning on RBI singles by Ruiz and Rob Douglass, an error, and Brandon Macchi's RBI double.
The Horned Frogs rallied with three in the top of the sixth and one in the seventh, but San Jose State answered with one in the bottom of the seventh and two in the eighth. Brucker's sacrifice fly scored the Spartans' run in the seventh. In the eighth, Douglass drove in a run with a double and later scored on a passed ball.
Ruiz and Tony Tognetti had three hits, and Brucker, Douglass, Macchi and Brian Stream all had two hits for San Jose State. Brucker also recorded three RBI.
Chris Key improved to 9-1 on the season. In six innings, he allowed nine hits and five runs. Chris Sherman worked the final three innings for his first save of the year.
