
TCU Holds On; Tops Kansas State 7-5

FORT WORTH – No. 19 TCU opened its Big 12 home slate with a 7-5 victory over Kansas State on Friday night at Lupton Stadium. Riley Cornelio turned in his second straight quality start and Kurtis Byrne drove in two.
The Rundown
Two walks and a David Bishop base hit loaded the bases with nobody out in the first for TCU. Gray Rodgers grounded into a fielder's choice for a 1-0 lead. A wild pitch and an errant pick-off throw made it a 3-0 ballgame.
Kansas State struck for a pair of runs with two outs in the third, but the Frogs answered in the bottom of the inning with a two spot of their own. Two walks, a wild pitch and a stolen base had two runners in scoring position with two out. Kurtis Byrne delivered a two run single up the middle to restore the three run lead, 5-2.
Riley Cornelio (3-1) kept the Wildcats at bay for most of his six innings on the mound. He battled through a bases loaded situation in the sixth, picking up his fifth strikeout of the night to leave them loaded. He finished the night allowing two runs on five hits and walking three before giving way to Luke Savage who threw two shutout innings.
TCU picked up two insurance runs in the seventh. Back-to-back doubles from Brayden Taylor and Bishop made it 6-2. Tommy Sacco hit a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to five, 7-2.
Kansas State made it interesting in the ninth as it pushed across three runs and had the tying runs on base. River Ridings came on and got the final out to secure his seventh save of the season.
