Rizer and Guenther selected in the seventh round
FORT WORTH – Two TCU baseball players were selected on Day 2 of the 2019 MLB First-Year Player Draft. Johnny Rizer (Baltimore) and Jake Guenther (Tampa Bay) were both selected in the seventh round.
Rizer, the 198thoverall pick, was the Baltimore Orioles seventh-round selection. A two-year member of the team, Rizer had a career year this season. One of three Horned Frogs to have played in all 62 games this season, he hit .311 with a team-leading 11 home runs. His 16 doubles ranked second, while his 39 RBIs were fourth on the squad.
He played in 103 games during his TCU career, making 96 starts. Rizer was a career .283 hitter with 23 doubles, five triples, 11 home runs and 52 RBIs.
Guenther, the 218thoverall pick, was the Tampa Bay Rays' seventh-round selection. In his first season on campus, Guenther was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year. The junior led the team with a .345 average in 58 games played. He hit 10 home runs and ranked second on the team with 42 RBIs. His 14 stolen bases led the team.
On Day 1, Nick Lodolo became TCU's highest-ever baseball draft pick when he was selected No. 7 overall by the Cincinnati Reds. Brandon Williamson was selected 59thoverall as the Seattle Mariners' second round pick.
During his 16 seasons as TCU's head coach, Jim Schlossnagle has seen 79 players drafted by 27 organizations.
