Young (9-2) was outstanding on the mound, firing eight scoreless innings of three-hit baseball. He faced more than three batters in an inning just three times. Twice a lead-off walk was erased on a double play and once he caught the runner trying to steal to end the inning. Trey Teakell allowed two hits and struck out two in his lone inning of work to preserve the shutout.
TCU grabbed an early lead with a run on two hits in the first. Cody Jones led off the game with a base hit and promptly stole second base. A Connor Wanhanen base hit moved Jones to third and he scored easily on a sac fly off the bat of Evan Skoug.
The Frogs took advantage of a two-out error in the third to pick up their second run of the game. The Mountaineers thought they had strike three, instead two pitches later Dane Steinhagen reached on an error by the shortstop. After stealing second, he scored easily on Nolan Brown's second hit of the game to make it 2-0.
The Frogs played small ball in the sixth as it pushed across another run. Brown battled through an eight-pitch at-bat to draw a one-out walk. He stole second and moved to third on a ground out. Garrett Crain dropped a perfect bunt down the third base line for a bunt single and on the play Brown scored for a 3-0 lead.
Young's lone jam came in the bottom of the seventh. A one-out error followed by a two-out double had two runners in scoring position. Facing the tying run, Young had no problems dispatching him as he got a grounder right to Elliott Barzilli at first for the final out of the frame.
TCU increased its lead to four in the top of the eighth. With two outs, Barzilli stole second and scored easily on Crain's second hit of the afternoon for a 4-0 lead.
The Frogs tacked on their final run of the game in the ninth. Cody Jones led off the inning with his third hit of the game. His third stolen base of the game had him standing on second. After a wild pitch, Jones scored easily on a ground ball of the bat of Wanhanen.
With the win, TCU improves to 37-9 overall and 13-5 in Big 12 play. The Horned Frogs will take the week off for finals before resuming play Friday night when they host Kansas. The three-game series against the Jayhawks kicks off TCU's final homestand of the season. Friday night's game is set for 6:30 and will be televised on FSSW+.
