FORT WORTH – Head coach Jim Schlossnagle and the TCU baseball team invite fans to save the date for the upcoming First Pitch Banquet which will be held on Friday, Feb. 12 at the Omni Hotel in downtown Fort Worth.
Former Horned Frogs and current Major League Baseball stars Jake Arrieta (Cubs) and Matt Carpenter (Cardinals) will headline the banquet. The duo will participate in a question and answer session with banquet attendees.
"This is always an incredibly special event and evening," said Schlossnagle. "We get the opportunity to honor the 2015 College World Series team, introduce the 2016 TCU baseball team as well as hear from two of the greatest players in major league baseball.
"We are incredibly appreciative of Matt and Jake to take time out of their busy schedule, preparing for the upcoming season, to attend and speak at our banquet. They both are TCU legends and are incredibly loyal to our program. I personally challenge every TCU fan to get out to this event so we can truly honor Matt and Jake as well as the current edition of the TCU Baseball team."
Arrieta pitched at TCU in 2006 and 2007, earning All-American accolades and leading the nation in victories (14) in 2006. A fifth round pick in the 2007 MLB draft by the Baltimore Orioles, Arrieta is coming off an NL Cy Young Award campaign with the Chicago Cubs. He led the majors with 22 victories, finishing the season with a 22-6 record. His 1.77 season ERA was second in the league.
In six Major League seasons between the Orioles and the Cubs, Arrieta is 56-38 with a 3.70 ERA in 136 appearances. He has tallied 717 strikeouts in 795 1/3 career innings pitched while limiting opponents to a .226 batting average.
Carpenter was a fixture on the diamond from 2005-2009, ranking second all-time at TCU with 241 games played. A three-time all-conference performer, he was drafted in the 13th round of the 2009 draft by the St. Louis Cardinals. Having just completed his fourth full season in the big leagues, Carpenter is a two-time NL All-Star at two different positions. He was an All-Star at second base in 2013 before making the roster as a third baseman in 2014.
An everyday player for the Cardinals, Carpenter owns a career batting average of .287 in 590 games played. He has 53 home runs as part of 605 career hits to go along with 267 RBIS.
The banquet will be held at the Omni Hotel, with a reception beginning at 6:15 p.m. and dinner to follow at 7 p.m. Cost for the event is $125 per seat or a table of 10 for $1250. Attendees also have the opportunity to sponsor a player for $125. Dress for the event calls for business attire. Proceeds will go to supporting the TCU baseball team with scholarships, equipment and travel aide.
Registration details will follow at a later date.
