FORT WORTH, Texas - Former TCU All-American Jake Arrieta was selected to the United States roster for the 10th Annual Futures game which is slated to take place on July 13 at Yankee Stadium as part of the MLB All-Star Weekend. Players on the United States roster for the Futures Game this year will be among those who are being considered for the 2008 U.S. Olympic team. The game pits American-born minor leaguers against their counterparts from around the world.
Earlier this summer, Arrieta was selected to the Carolina League-California League All-Star Game. This season as a member of the Frederick Keys, Arrieta is 5-3 with a 2.88 ERA. He is ranked second in the Carolina League in strikeouts with 85 in 84 1/3 innings of work. Opponents are hitting just .192 off of the right-hander. He was a fifth-round pick of the Baltimore Orioles in 2007.
Tino Martinez, a two-time All-Star, was named to manage the World Team while Davey Johnson, a four-time All Star who will lead Team USA at the upcoming Olympics in Beijing and was a World Series winning manager with the New York Mets in 1986, will guide Team USA.
This 25-man Futures Game roster will help determine the 24-man team that will participate in the Beijing Olympics. USA Baseball General Manager Bob Watson said during the MLB.TV broadcast that 17-18 players from this Futures Game team will likely make the Olympic team.
