FORT WORTH, Texas - Head baseball coach Jim Schlossnagle has completed his staff for the 2005 season. Former Flower Mound High School head coach Derek Matlock has joined the staff as the volunteer assistant coach.
Matlock, 36, comes to TCU with an outstanding baseball background. For the past five seasons, he has been the head coach of the Flower Mound Jaguars, a team he started from scratch in 1999. From 2002-04, he led them to three straight playoff appearances and two state appearances. For the last three years, his Jaguars have been ranked among the nation's top 25 teams. In 1998, Matlock was named Coach of the Year by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and the Dallas Morning News. This past season, he led the team to the Class 5A Championship game in which they were defeated by Corpus Christi Moody.
Prior to his time at Flower Mound, Matlock coached at Eastern Hills High School in Fort Worth. After two seasons as an assistant coach, Matlock was named head coach in 1995. In 1996 and 1997, he was honored as the district Coach of the Year. The Star-Telegram honored him as Coach of the Year in 1998. He has an overall 251-67 record as a head coach.
"I am very excited about this great opportunity to coach baseball at TCU and to be around a group of coaches that are so well respected," said Matlock.
"We are excited to add Coach Matlock to our staff," said Schlossnagle. "He fits the mold of the rest of our staff perfectly-young, energetic and aggressive. He has had great success in developing programs into consistent winners and I have no doubt he will help our program continue to progress to the elite levels of college baseball.
