Fort Worth, Texas - Shelby Ford, a second-team all-conference performer and Freshman all-American, has been named to the sixth annual preseason All-America college baseball team as voted upon by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA). The shortstop is only the third Horned Frog in school history to earn preseason All-American honors, as he claimed third team accolades. Terry Trofholz garnered second-team honors in 2002 and Clayton Jerome earned third-team recognition in 2004.
Ford led the 2004 Horned Frogs with 16 home runs, tops among all Conference USA freshmen. He finished his first collegiate season with a .301 batting average to go along with 56 RBI and 66 runs scored. He appeared in every game except for one last season and showed his versatility by playing three different positions. After starting the year as the starting third baseman, Ford moved to short with three regular season games remaining. He helped lead the Frogs to the Conference USA Tournament title and was the lone representative on the Austin all-Regional team.
Ford earned numerous honors following the 2004 season. He was named to the Louisville Slugger TPX Freshman all-America team as well as the Baseball America Freshman all-American squad. He was named second-team all-conference in addition to being named to the Conference USA all-Freshmen team.
"This is a good honor for Shelby and our program," remarked Schlossnagle. "Certainly, it's nice to have preseason honors and Shelby is very deserving."
Joining Ford on the All-America teams from Conference USA are two other third-teamers, Tulane's Brian Bogusevic and Southern Miss' Patrick Ezell.
