FORT WORTH, Texas - The Purple and White World Series is even at one game apiece following a 2-0 shutout by the Purple team on Sunday morning. The White team was held in check by outstanding performances on the mound from Brad Furnish and Shawn Ferguson. Bo Cogbill and J.J. Estrada were the offensive stars of the game as each recorded a two-hit game.
Furnish picked up the win for the Purple team as he threw four shutout innings. He struck out four and walked two while surrending just two hits in those four innings. Shawn Ferguson nailed the game down, throwing three shutout innings of his own to record the save. He came on in the fifth inning following an Andrew Walker double to lead off the inning. Ferguson got a groundout and struck out the final two hitters in the inning to squash the comeback chance.
The Purple team opened the scoring in the third inning when Bo Cogbill drew a one-out walk. A two-out RBI single by J.J. Estrada plated the games first run.
The Purple team added an insurance run an inning later. Cogbill and Ferguson put together back-to-back singles to lead off the inning. A Spencer Jackson flyball advanced the runners up a base. Cogbill was able to scamper home on a wild pitch a batter later to make it a 2-0 ballgame.
The White team got good performances on the mound as well. Jake Friemel started for the White squad and was relieved by Matt McGuirk. Friemel struck out four and walked three, giving up three hits in his four innings of work. McGuirk threw two innings, surrendering only one run and striking out one.
The World Series champion will be determined on Monday afternoon at 3:15 p.m. at Lupton Stadium. The game will feature the marquee match-up of the fall season as senior Chad Underwood will face off against newcomer, junior Lance Broadway. The game is open to the public and free of charge. -tcu-
