FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU baseball program earned national recognition for its recruiting efforts this past year. With 18 newcomers on the squad, Baseball America ranked the Frogs' recruiting class as the third best in the nation. TCU ranks only behind Texas and Arizona State for the top recruiting and is one of only two Conference USA teams to be represented in the top 12. Tulane ranks right behind the Frogs at No. 4. Baseball America ranked the Frogs as having the ninth best recruiting class following the early signing period, but with the additions of transfers Lance Broadway, Shawn Ferguson and Brad Furnish, the TCU recruiting class got even better.
The recruiting efforts led by assistant coach Todd Whitting yielded 11 freshmen, four junior college transfers and three four-year transfers. TCU signed 12 freshmen to letters of intent last fall and lost only one to the draft. Matt McGuirk (19), Zach Ashwood (26th) and Sam Demel (35th) each picked TCU after being selected in the draft.
The ranking class also included John Dao (IF, Fort Worth, Texas/Trinity Valley School), Jake Friemel (RHP, Victoria, Texas/Victoria Memorial), Andrew Walker (C, Houston, Texas/Bellaire), Chase Kiecke (OF, Bellville, Texas/Bellville), Jason Troth (LHP, Richmond, Texas/Fort Bend Austin), Matt Carpenter (IF, Sugar Land, Texas/Elkins), Will Skelton (LHP, Dallas, Texas/Highland Park), Spencer Jackson (OF, Sugar Land, Texas/Elkins) and Tyler Kersten (RHP, Jones Creek, Texas/Brazosport). Transferring this fall were Ryan Pack (OF, Lawton, Okla./Seward County), Kody Haverkamp (LHP, Roanoke, Texas/Navarro JC), Keith Conlon (OF, Dallas, Texas/Weatherford JC) and Stuart Musslewhite (IF, Houston, Texas/Houston).
"This ranking is great for our program and just another justification of what a great school TCU is," raved Schlossnagle. "It is also a tribute to the hard work of Todd Whitting, Matt Siegel and Mike Dilley. At the same time, recruiting rankings alone don't get you to Omaha so we will have to continue to improve daily to back this up."
