TCU Edges Hawaii, 5-4

Trailing 2-1 in the 8th, the Frogs came up with four runs on five hits and a Hawaii fielding error. With one out, Rudy Rivera reached on a fielding error by Gregg Omori. Erick Macha followed with a bloop single to right field, sending Rivera to third. Macha advanced to second on the throw from the outfield. Bates followed with a sharp single up the middle, scoring Rivera and Macha. Walter Olmstead singled to right field, then Bates scored on a balk by relief pitcher Bryan Lee. Jonathan Marshall' single scored Olmstead, increasing the TCU lead to 5-2.
Macha led TCU with three hits and two runs scored, while Marshall had two hits.
TCU starter Justin Crowder and Sean Yamashita were locked in a pitchers' duel for most of the game. Crowder, the winning pitcher, allowed three runs on seven hits, three walks and six strikeouts in eight innings. Stan Newton allowed one run in the ninth, but held on to record his fourth save of the year. Yamashita allowed five runs, three earned on seven hits in 7.1 innings. TCU had only one hit off of Yamashita thru the first five innings. The Rainbows were victimized by four errors in the game, allowing TCU to score two unearned runs.
Hawaii scored two runs in the third on two hits, the biggest a two-run single by Patrick Scalabrini. The Frogs came up with one run in the fourth on a Macha triple and a Olmstead groundout.
The Rainbows came up with two runs in the ninth on three hits, but Newton struck out Matt Purtell and Cortland Wilson to end the game. Newton gave up two hits in the ninth, but he struck out three batters.
The rubber match of the three-game series is scheduled for Monday afternoon, April 16 with first-pitch scheduled for 2:35 p.m.
