FROGS ENTER BUSY WEEK, PLAY SIX GAMES IN NEXT SEVEN DAYS
The TCU Horned Frogs (22-15, 13-7 WAC) enter one of the busiest weeks of the
season. Beginning with the Wednesday (April 11) afternoon contest at Texas
Tech, the Frogs will play six games in a seven-day stretch. Following the
trip to Lubbock, TCU will return to the TCU Diamond to open a five-game home
stand with single games against UTA and Texas, and a three-game series
agains thte Hawaii Rainbows. The Frogs will host UTA on Thursday (April 12),
then Hawaii (April 14-16), then conclude the six-game stretch against Texas
at The Ballpark in Arlington on Tuesday, April 17.
104th SEASON OF TCU BASEBALL
This is the 104th edition of TCU baseball. The Frogs have an all-time mark
of 1524-1322-25 for a winning percentage of .536. Last year, the Frogs
recorded a 22-34 win-loss mark, including a 12-18 record in conference play.
Next season, TCU will become a member of Conference USA.
WAC PLAY
The Frogs are in their fifth and final season in the Western Athletic
Conference. TCU has compiled a conference record of 77-61-0 in five WAC
seasons. Last year, TCU ended conference play with a record of 12-18. Always
tough at the TCU Diamond, the Frogs have a record of 44-23 in home (WAC)
conference games. On the road, the Frogs have compiled a record of 33-38 in
WAC games.
GAME COVERAGE
TCU baseball is carried on KTCU 88.7 FM with Chuck LaMendola calling the
action. TCU fans can access the radio broadcast of any TCU game from
anywhere in the world via the internet at www.ktcu.tcu.edu. The TCU pregame
show will begin 15 minutes before the first pitch of every TCU game.
HEAD COACH LANCE BROWN
The 2001 Horned Frogs are under the guidance of head coach Lance Brown (TCU,
1967). Brown, TCU's all-time winningest coach, has a record of 442-417. In
his 15th season at TCU, Brown is assisted by Donnie Watson, Barry Takahashi
and Tom Hardgrove.
TCU-TEXAS TECH SERIES
When the Frogs and Red Raiders get things started on Wednesday afternoon, it
will be the 116th meeting between the two schools... TCU leads in the
overall series, 61-53-1... this is the second of three games this year
between the two teams... Texas Tech defeated TCU, 5-4, at Enron Field in the
first meeting... the Frogs will host the Raiders at the TCU Diamond on April
24... Lance Brown has a career-record of 22-27 vs. Tech... since the SWC
ended in 1996, TCU is 5-8 vs. Tech... last year, TCU won both games against
Tech, winning 14-4 in Fort Worth and 7-5 in Lubbock.
TCU-UTA SERIES
When the Frogs and Mavericks get things started on Thursday afternoon, it
will be the 109th meeting between the two schools... TCU leads in the
overall series, 65-43-0... this will be the second of five games this year
between the two teams... on March 13, UTA defeated TCU, 5-3, at Allan Saxe
Stadium... the Mavericks have won three of the last four games against
TCU... the lone win for TCU came last season at the TCU Diamond, a 13-9
decision... Lance Brown has a career record of 27-20 vs. UTA.
NEVADA RECAP
TCU and Nevada split a four-game series to complete the six-game season
series... both teams won three of the six games... in the four-game set at
Nevada, the Frogs won the opener, 12-7, and game three, 8-7... the Wolf Pack
took game, 15-7, then won game four by a score of 7-3... in the first game,
TCU defeated Nevada on the strength of a four-run first and a four-run
eighth inning... Jason Price drove in three runs on two hits, including a
two-run home run in the first, and Terry Trofholz and Erick Macha accounted
for all four runs in the eighth with a three-run shot by Trofholz and a solo
home run by Macha... Patrick Newburn, in his first start of the season,
earned the win, allowing five runs in five innings... Stan Newton picked up
his third save of the year, pitching 2.1 scoreless innings... in game two,
Nevada exploded for 15 runs on 19 hits, scoring at least one run in six of
eight innings... after the Frogs took a 3-0 lead in the first, Nevada scored
the next nine runs to take a 9-3 lead... TCU rallied for four runs in the
sixth on a solo home run by Tom Bates and a three-run homer by Jonathan
Marshall... the Wolf Pack pulled away, scoring three runs in both the
seventh and eighth innings... starter Chris Bradshaw allowed five runs on
nine hits in three innings, and reliever Chad Durham gave up 10 runs on 10
hits in the final five innings... in game three, TCU rallied for four runs
in their last two at-bats to win 8-7... trailing 6-4 entering the 8th
inning, TCU scored a pair of runs on two hits and two Nevada throwing errors
to tie the game 6-6... then in the 9th, TCU put together four straight base
hits to score two runs and take an 8-6 lead... Nevada threatened in the
bottom half of the inning, scoring one run... Marshall and Walter Olmstead
led the Frogs with three hits and two RBI each, while Macha, Bates and Mike
Settle each had two hits... Newton earned the win in relief, allowing one
run in 2.0 innings... Trofholz struck out three and did not allow a run in
2.1 innings of middle relief... in the finale, Nevada starter Mateo
Miramontes allowed 12 hits and struck out 12, allowing only three runs in a
complete-game effort... Price had four hits and Settle drove in three runs
on two hits to lead the Frogs... TCU starter David Tombrella suffered the
loss... he allowed four runs in 3.1 innings... Price hit .600 9-15) with six
RBI in the four games, while Marshall hit .500 (6-12) with five RBI... as a
team, the Frogs hit .338 while the Wolf Pack hit .396... the TCU starting
pitchers' combined to allow 20 runs in only 16 innings pitched.
DIAMOND NOTES
Due to the rainout at San Jose State, the Frogs and Spartans will play a
four-game series when San Jose State visits Fort Worth... the two teams will
play a single games on Friday (April 27) and Sunday (Apri 29), and a
doubleheader on Saturday (April 28)...the start time for the Hawaii contest
scheduled for Sunday, April 15 has been pushed back to 3:05 p.m... Tom Bates
has walked a career-high 22 times this season... the Frogs dropped to second
in the WAC in batting average, but they continue to lead the league in runs
scored with 287... the Frogs have hit 38 home runs this season... last year,
they hit only 44 home runs... thus far, TCU is 4-4 against teams from the
Big 12 conference... they have three games remaining... With 22 wins, the
Frogs have already matched their 2000 season total.
