San Jose State Avoids Sweep, Defeats TCU, 5-3

FORT WORTH (Mar. 5) -- Chris Key and Tim Adinolfi held TCU to three runs on eight hits, allowing San Jose State to pull out a 5-3 win over the Frogs Sunday at the TCU Diamond. TCU drops to 7-13 overall, 2-1 in WAC play. San Jose State improves to 11-5 overall, 3-3 in WAC action.
Key, who improved to 4-0 on the season, allowed only two earned runs on eight hits and one walk in 7. 2 innings. Adinolfi retired all four men he faced in the final 1.1 innings.
The Spartans scored twice in the second and third innings, building a 4-1 lead. In the second, San Jose State put together three consecutive singles to open the inning, scoring runs on Jamie Hiegel's single and Adam Shorsher groundout. The Spartans then scored two more in the third on three hits, the biggest a run-scoring single by Junior Ruiz. Overall, the Spartans had 16 hits in the game, one more than they had in the first two games combined.
San Jose State chased TCU starter Chris Frazier in the fourth after the Spartans had increased the lead to 5-1. Frazier (1-3) allowed five runs on nine hits in 3.2 innings. Stan Newton and Chad Durham shut out San Jose State the rest of the way. Newton pitched four scoreless innings and Durham pitched the final 1.1 innings with out allowing a run.
TCU left field Mark Hamilton had three of the Frogs eight hits, including a solo home run in the first and a double in the eighth. Erick Macha contributed two hits and one RBI for the Frogs.
TCU will open an eight-game road trip on Tuesday, when they travel to Austin to face the Texas Longhorns. First-pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Next weekend, the Frogs will open a six-game road trip to the Hawaiian Islands, where they will face the University of Hawai`i and Hawai`i-Hilo.
TCU won the first two games of the series by scores of 13-5 on Friday, and 6-4 on Saturday.
