HOUSTON – No. 9 TCU volleyball bounced back with a pair of wins on Friday to open its weekend at the Rice Invitational. The Horned Frogs (9-2, 0-0 Big 12) swept Cornell and took down Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 3-1.
With one match to go in non-conference play and nine wins already, TCU looks to start the season with 10 wins or better for the first time since 2015 (10-2) and the sixth time since joining the Big 12 Conference (2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015).
Sophomore Becca Kelley powered the Frogs' offense, totaling 22 kills over the two matches. Defensively, senior middle blocker Sarah Sylvester tallied the 382nd of her career, passing Anna Vaughn (381, 2003-06) for the fifth most in school history.
MATCH ONE | TCU 3, CORNELL 0
The Frogs took care of business in the first match of the day, sweeping Cornell in straight sets. Kelley led the way with 10 kills on a .350 clip, and Sylvester finished with a team-high four blocks.
TCU was in control early, scoring eight of the first 10 points to start the match, and held onto the six-point advantage through the media timeout. Lauren Murphy stretched the lead to seven at 17-10, but a 7-0 run for the Bears knotted the match up at 20 all. Cornell gave the Frogs everything it had, but the Frogs hung on for a 26-24 set victory.
In the second, TCU made sure there was no doubt. A pair of aces from Evan Hendrix and Murphy helped build up a 9-2 lead, forcing the Bears to call a timeout. The Frogs kept on rolling out of the break. A Sylvester block doubled the lead at 18-9, and a pair of kills by Mikala Young closed out a dominant 25-14 second set.
Looking to close things out, Kelley sparked a 5-0 run to get TCU going in the third, and Emily Van Groningen capped off a 3-0 run with a kill to put the Frogs up 10-6. Cornell battled back with an 8-1 run of its own to hold a three-point lead at the media timeout. TCU responded with four straight points to retake the lead. The Bears fended off back-to-back set points to pull within one, but Hendrix slammed the door shut to close out the sweep.
MATCH TWO | TCU 3, TEXAS A&M-CORPUS CHRISTI 1
TCU earned its second win of the day in the afternoon, taking down Texas A&M Corpus Christi in four sets. Kelley once again paced the Frogs with 12 kills, and Hendrix recorded a double-double, finishing with 10 kills and 10 digs. Sylvester tied her career-high with nine kills on just 12 swings (.750) and added four blocks.
In the opening set, TCU stormed out to an 18-5 lead thanks to a 9-0 run with Murphy at the service line. With a double-digit lead, the Frogs cruised to a comfortable 25-11 set victory as Sylvester racked up four kills in the set, including the winner.
The momentum carried into the second set, where TCU again won by double digits. This time it was Hendrix leading an 8-0 run to make it 11-4 early. Van Groningen helped the Frogs extend the lead to 11 at 21-10, and TCU closed it out with a 25-14 set victory.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi got a set back, winning the third. The Islanders found themselves ahead by five at 24-19. The Frogs managed to fend off four straight set points, pulling within one, but couldn't complete the comeback.
TCU battled in the fourth to prevent the match from continuing. TAMUCC hung around and both teams found themselves tied at 23-23, but the Frogs took care of business to secure the set and the match in four sets.
