No. 18 Volleyball Sweeps No. 14 Purdue on the Road

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Looking to bounce back after a tough road loss, No. 18 TCU walked into Holloway Gymnasium and made a statement, sweeping No. 14 Purdue on Sunday afternoon. The Horned Frogs (3-2, 0-0 Big 12) picked up their second ranked win in five days after knocking off No. 8 SMU in five sets on Wednesday.
Becca Kelley led the charge for TCU with 18 kills on a blistering .471 clip. The senior committed just two errors on 34 swings while adding nine digs and four blocks. Evan Hendrix joined her in double figures with 11 kills and 10 digs, notching her second double-double of the season. Reese Robins continued to provide an offensive spark with seven kills on .455 hitting and an ace. Rosemary Archer dished out 23 assists and Reese Wilburn added 10 as TCU hit .257 as a team.
Defensively, the Frogs frustrated the Boilermakers all afternoon. TCU held Purdue to a .172 hitting percentage and racked up 57 digs and eight blocks in just three sets of work. Alice Volpe paced the Frogs with 17 digs, while De'Andrea McMillian and Kinsley Young each finished with four blocks.
The opening set featured 12 ties and four lead changes as neither team could create separation early. Purdue grabbed a slight 15-14 advantage before Robins flipped the momentum. The senior slammed down a kill to even the score and then stepped behind the service line as TCU rattled off seven unanswered points to jump in front, 21-15. Kelley scored three times during the run while Young helped deliver a pair of blocks at the net. Purdue answered with a late push, managing to pull within one at 22-21, but Hendrix stopped the run with a kill. Lauren Murphy came off the bench to serve and secured the final point with a kill for the 25-22 win.
Once again, the Frogs had to battle back in the second. Purdue used a 5-0 run to take a 10-7 lead and eventually stretched its advantage to five at 18-13. TCU responded in a big way, scoring 12 of the next 13 points to cap off the set. A mini 4-0 run pulled the Frogs within one as the Boilermakers called a timeout to help them side out. From there, Gibson served TCU out with eight unanswered points, including an ace, to hand the Frogs a 2-0 lead with a 25-19 victory.
Looking to finish off the sweep, TCU found itself in another back-and-forth battle in the third. The set featured 13 ties with neither team leading by more than three. Young and McMillian helped the Frogs open up a 19-16 advantage, but Purdue fought back to even the score at 20. Tied at 2, Hendrix hammered down her 11th kill of the afternoon to induce match point. Fighting to stay alive, the Boilermakers thought they had won a gritty back-and-forth rally to tie the set at 24-24, but a challenge by head coach Jason Williams revealed Purdue was in the net. With the call overturned, the Frogs rejoiced as they won the final set 25-23 to complete the sweep.
No. 18 TCU continues its road swing with three matches in Tampa at the South Florida Invitational Sept. 10-12 hosted by USF.
