HOUSTON – No. 9 TCU volleyball tied a bow on its non-conference slate, defeating Rice 3-1 and picking up its 10th win of the season Saturday afternoon.
The match had extra meaning for sophomore libero Alice Volpe, who lined up across the net from her mother, Genny Volpe, the Rice head coach. It marked the second year in a row that the mother-daughter duo has faced off against each other.
The Horned Frogs (10-2, 0-0 Big 12) tied their best start to a season since 2015 (also 10-2) and recorded at least 10 wins in non-conference play to start the season for the sixth time since joining the Big 12 Conference (2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015).
Defending Big 12 Rookie of the Week, Samara Coleman led the Frogs with 12 kills on a .370 hitting percentage. The reigning Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week, Evan Hendrix, followed with 11 kills and 12 digs for her fifth double-double of the season. On the defensive side, Volpe finished with 20 digs and Sarah Sylvester posted a team-best nine blocks.
After a 3-0 weekend at the Rice Invitational, Sylvester, Volpe and Hendrix each earned All-Tournament team honors, with Hendrix being named the Tournament MVP.
TCU never trailed in the opening set, scoring the first three points to start the match. Rice managed to tie the score once at 5-5, but a 6-1 run gave the Frogs a nice cushion at 13-7. They continued to press on, holding a six-point advantage as Lauren Murphy tallied a service ace to push TCU into the red zone. Coleman gave the Frogs set-point with her sixth kill of the opening set, and Hendrix capped off the first to give TCU a 25-21 set win.
Rice evened the match, taking the second set. The Owls jumped out to an early 10-4 lead, forcing the Frogs to call a timeout. TCU clawed back within two after back-to-back Ella Foti aces and a kill by Hendrix, but it wasn't enough as Rice closed out the set on a 9-2 run.
Both teams traded big runs in the third set. The Frogs had the early five-point lead at the media break but watched Rice battle back into the set with a late 6-0 run to tie the score at 23-23. Kelley and Hendrix stepped up with big time kills down the stretch to help close out a 25-23 set win.
After stalling the Owls' comeback attempt in set three, the Frogs had all the momentum on their side. TCU ran away with the fourth set, never trailing as it earned a 25-15 victory to close out the match and its non-conference slate.
The Frogs are back at home in Schollmaier Arena on Wednesday, Sept. 24, to open Big 12 play against Houston at 6:30 p.m.
