AUSTIN – No. 9 TCU volleyball rounds out its non-conference slate in Austin with a top 10 matchup against No. 2 Texas on Wednesday, Sept. 17, at 8 p.m. CT on ESPNU before traveling to Houston for the Rice Invitational Sept. 19-20.
TCU NOTABLES
• After a 4-0 week that featured a pair of ranked wins, the Frogs were once again the biggest riser in the AVCA/TARAFLEX Coaches Poll, cracking the top 10 for the first time in program history.
• Over the last two weeks, TCU has climbed a combined 15 spots in the rankings from No. 24 to No. 9.
• TCU is tied for the national lead with five wins against top-25 teams. The Frogs upset the defending national champions No. 5 Penn State, dominated No. 19 UCLA on back-to-back nights, knocked off No. 8 Texas A&M and defeated No. 23 Missouri.
• At 7-1 through its first eight matches, TCU is off to its best start to a season since 2015 (also 7-1).
• A pair of Horned Frogs received Big 12 Conference Weekly honors. Evan Hendrix was named offensive player of the week after a career-high 32 kills against No. 23 Missouri, and true freshman Samara Coleman was named rookie of the week after a 19-kill performance against No. 8 Texas A&M.
• TCU takes on Texas for the first time since 2023. The last time the two programs met, the Frogs packed a program record 7,412 fans in Schollmaier Arena but fell in five sets to the Longhorns.
• Senior captain and preseason All-Big 12 member Jalyn Gibson announced on Sept. 5 that she suffered a season-ending knee injury in TCU's win over Penn State.
• Heading into the 2025 season, TCU was picked to finish fifth in the Big 12 Conference, receiving one first place vote.
SCOUTING REPORT
Texas comes into the match with an undefeated 6-0 record which features five wins over ranked opponents. The Longhorns are coming off a sweep of No. 7 Arizona State on Sunday. Led by 2024 All-American Torrey Stafford and back-to-back SEC freshman of the week Cari Spears, Texas' offense averages 13.70 kills per set at a .256 clip. The defense is anchored by middle blockers Nya Bunton and Ayden Ames as well as libero Emma Halter. Texas leads the all-time series 25-1. TCU's lone win against the Longhorns came in 2015 in Fort Worth. Wednesday's meeting will be the first between the two schools since 2023.
FAMILY AFFAIR
• It will be a house divided for the Volpe family on Sept. 20 when TCU closes out non-conference play at Rice.
• A sophomore, Alice has established herself as one of the top liberos in the Big 12. Last season she earned a spot on the All-Rookie team and so far in 2025 she ranks third in the conference with 4.17 digs per set.
• Coaching for the past 22 seasons, before Alice was even born, Genny Volpe has guided the Owls to eight NCAA tournaments and is the winningest head coach in program history.
• Last season, the Frogs hosted Rice and Alice picked up the 3-1 win over her mom, recorded 10 digs.
AIR HENDRIX
• After leading the Big 12 with 58 total kills and averaging 4.46 per set (eighth), sophomore outside hitter Evan Hendrix was named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 16.
• Hendrix was key in helping the Frogs go 4-0, including two wins over ranked opponents.
• The Scottsdale, Arizona, product finished with 10 kills and 16 digs in TCU's 3-2 win over No. 8 Texas A&M (9/10) and went off for a career-high 32 kills on a .348 clip in the win over No. 23 Missouri (9/12).
• Her 32 kills rank as the most by any player in the Big 12 this season, the most by any player in the country in a four-set match and the third-most in school history in a four-set match at TCU.
SHE'S JUST A FRESHMAN
• True freshman Samara Coleman was named Big 12 Rookie of the week on Sept. 16 after having a coming out party against No. 8 Texas A&M, finishing with a career-high 19 kills on 35 swings (.457).
• It took just two sets for the highly-touted rookie to surpass her previous best of eight kills as she lit up the Aggies.
GIG EM OUT OF TOWN
• Battling for five sets, No. 15 TCU volleyball defended its home court and knocked off No. 8 Texas A&M in a thriller.
• Samara Coleman led the way for the Frogs with a career-high 19 kills on a blistering .457 clip.
• She was joined by three of her teammates in double figures. Lauren Murphy finished with 13 kills and a team-high three aces. Sophomores Evan Hendrix and Becca Kelley added 10 and 11 kills, respectively, coming alive down the stretch to propel TCU to victory.
• Reigning Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week, Sarah Sylvester lived up to her award, recording a season-high 11 blocks, including the match-winner.
FIGHT IN THE FORT CHAMPS
• TCU capped off a perfect 3-0 weekend at the annual Fight in the Fort.
• The Frogs opened the tournament with back-to-back sweeps over Wyoming (9/11) and Rhode Island (9/12).
• TCU tallied eight aces against the Cowgirls (9/11).
• In the win over the Rams, all 17 available players saw action on the court and the team hit .340.
• The Frogs closed out the weekend with a 3-1 win over No. 23 Missouri (9/12) that featured two 30-point sets and a career night by Evan Hendrix.
