COLLEGE STATION – For the fourth time in the last four seasons, TCU volleyball is dancing into the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament after the Horned Frogs swept SFA on Friday night in Reed Arena. With the victory, TCU became one of 15 programs to advance to the Round of 32 in each of the last four seasons.
"I feel like we're in rare company to have the ability to get past the First Round and even just make the NCAA Tournament," said head coach Jason Williams. "My staff is awesome. I can't do it without them. Obviously, we've got some great athletes too. We're 1-0 right now, and we're going to do what we can to go 2-0 tomorrow."
The Frogs' (21-10, 10-8 Big 12) offensive firepower proved to be too much for the Ladyjacks (23-8, 15-1 Southland). Sophomore Evan Henrix finished with a team-high 19 kills on .308 hitting percentage, but the highlight of her night came in the opening set when she tallied her 500th kill of the season to become just the fifth player in program history to eclipse 500 kills in a single season. Becca Kelley also had an efficient outing, finishing with 10 kills on 20 swings.
Setters Ella Foti and Rosemary Archer ran the offense, feeding their hitters to a .302 clip. It marks TCU's seventh match this season hitting above .300 and second-best in school history in the NCAA Tournament. A big part of the Frogs' success was the passing. Libero Alice Volpe registered her sixth match with at least 20 digs this year and moved into ninth in TCU single-season history with 462 digs in her sophomore campaign.
TCU wasted no time as Hendrix put down a kill and a solo block to start the match. The Frogs quickly capitalized on a few SFA miscues and went on a 7-0 run that featured a pair of aces with Kelley at the service line. Leading 17-5, TCU cruised the rest of the way in the first set, hitting .526 as a team. Hendrix capped off a 25-8 opening set with an ace to show that the Frogs weren't messing around.
SFA kept things much closer in the second, briefly leading TCU by three until the Frogs rattled off six unanswered points to take a 16-13 lead. Just when it looked like TCU was going to close things out, the Ladyjacks put together a late 6-0 run themselves to earn set point at 24-22. Out of a timeout, the Frogs locked in to score the next four points, aided by two kills from Foti, to secure the second set 26-24 in extra points.
With all the momentum, TCU had its sights set on the sweep. The sophomore duo of Hendrix and Kelley fueled the fire, helping the Frogs earn match point at 24-18. Hendrix fittingly slammed down the final kill of the night, her 19th, to send TCU into the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament.
No. 20 TCU will face a familiar foe in No. 6 Texas A&M in the Round of 32 on Saturday, December 6, at 7 p.m. CT.
